Primary Job Function

The Financial and Policy Communications Manager will play a pivotal role in helping formulate, execute and sustain an external communications strategy for Abbott that positions the company as a global healthcare leader. The role requires a strategic thinker and creative communicator who has demonstrated the ability to conduct strategic media relations, develop and execute communications programs and manage key stakeholders. This person should have experience in financial communications (e.g., earnings/business performance, M&A, issues) and in securing positive media coverage that supports company reputation. The right candidate will be an excellent writer with experience covering financial/business topics and have experience managing stakeholders/clients in fast-moving and complex matters.

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Position the company as a healthcare leader and strong investment through proactive media relations and external storytelling.

  • Cultivate strong relationships with key reporters/editors and secure positive media coverage of Abbott’s financial performance, quality of management, business strategy and innovation. Serve as company spokesperson on key financial/business topics.

  • Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, serving as a trusted business partner and providing strategic communications counsel.

  • Create content across multiple channels to highlight Abbott’s leadership and products.

  • Protect the company’s reputation.

Position Accountability / Scope

  • Develops and executes integrated external communications plans to increase awareness of Abbott’s financial performance, quality of management, business strategy and innovation, including securing positive media coverage on these and other topics.

  • Interfaces with various division and corporate constituencies, including government affairs, investor relations, legal, finance, marketing, regulatory, medical and senior management.

  • Develops materials including media messaging, research summaries/analysis, newsletters, written articles, social media posts and other communications tools.

  • Oversee PR agency management.

  • Reports to the Senior Manager, External Communications.

  • Readiness to travel 15% annually.

Minimum Experience / Training Required

  • More than 7 years of experience in media relations, with a deep understanding of how to use external communications to drive awareness and enhance reputation.

  • Experience in developing and implementing media relations plans and proven ability to place stories and manage relationships with reporters/editors.

  • Experience in financial communications, including external communications planning and execution around financial performance, M&A, regulatory filings, issues or related topics.

  • Excellent writer and communicator who can organize, summarize, clarify and communicate ideas simply, succinctly and accurately.

  • Skilled at building stakeholder trust and providing strategic counsel.

  • Able to achieve results while dealing with ambiguity and a rapid pace of change.

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, business, marketing or related field.

The base pay for this position is $95,000.00 – $190,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
