BAE Systems in Jacksonville, Florida is hiring for anEnvironmental Specialistto support our Ship Repair shipyard. In this position as an Environmental Specialist, you will participate closely with the Safety, Health and Environment team, providing environmental program expertise and compliance support with a focus on activities related to hazardous materials/waste, air quality, water quality/storm water, domestic and industrial wastewater, drinking water, SPCC/oil transfer, facility inspections, emergency response, training, and other similar environmental functions. Working under the direction of the site Environmental Manager, you'll be charged to implement and maintain an Environmental Management System (EMS) that includes a myriad of activities and responsibilities pertaining to the effective deployment of environmental programs.

  • Liaison with local, state, and federal agencies and customers.

  • Develop and implement programs to ensure regulatory compliance obligations are fulfilled in a cost-effective manner and that environmental risks are effectively managed.

  • Collect data, perform analysis, and prepare related environmental reports.

  • Communicate requirements to site employees, contractors, and customers.

  • Manage specific focus areas: Air quality permitting and emissions data management, storm water/NPDES/Industrial discharge programs, drinking water program, hazardous materials/waste management, over-water transfer of oil, regulatory submission of reports and data for these and similar environmental media.

  • Review and interpret regulations and permits and develop and implement related training, procedures and inspection checklists.

  • Conduct incident investigations, root cause analysis and develop corrective/preventive action recommendations.

  • Some supervisorial responsibilities for work activities conducted by small team of other SHE professionals.

  • Support on-site, in-person at the shipyard.

  • Other related job duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Typically requires a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Engineering or Science, Sustainability, Biology, Chemistry, or similar discipline and two (2) years of direct environmental work experience, or the overall equivalent.

  • Significant knowledge of Florida and federal laws and regulations relating to environmental matters.

  • Able to coordinate multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with little oversight or supervision.

  • Excellent communication skills for effective interactions and dissemination of information to a diverse audience. Ability to write procedures and inspection checklists. Able to discuss and present technical information to various recipients including the workforce, customers, peers, leadership, etc.

  • Able to develop and conduct training.

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point.

  • Able to support a high-volume of data entry.

  • Ability to analyze, compare, and interpret data.

  • Experience in advanced report writing.

  • Ability to identify relevant regulations, interpret and summarize them.

  • Capable of conducting incident investigations to include root cause analysis, preventive and corrective action recommendations and follow-up.

  • Experience coordinating complex projects/regulatory action.

  • Organizational skills with a demonstrated attention to detail.

  • Ability to obtain DBIDS for access to DoD facilities.

  • Valid Drivers License.

  • Must be able to support on-site at the shipyard.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Environmental program experience in general manufacturing or defense contracting.

  • Title V Air Permit experience.

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER and annual 8-Hour refresher training.

  • Initial and annual refresher training in hazardous waste management (RCRA).

  • Knowledge in ISO 14001, including experience in auditing of requirements.

  • Relevant professional certifications.

  • Maritime experience.

Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $68700 - $116800

However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
