Job Description

The Smartwool Developer - Apparel and Accessories oversees the development of apparel and accessories product lines from concept through production ready samples/spec packages. Responsible for coordinating fabric, costing, excellent quality samples, and commercial ready

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.
  • Manage work to the development calendar and processes including pre-costing, development quality evaluation, fabric, trims and final spec packages. Focus on value engineering, and on-time, accurate, quality sales samples

  • Work with Development Manager, Product Line Managers (PLM), factory partners and Operations Sourcing Manager to review and negotiate costing to company margin goals

  • Create comprehensive and accurate spec packages/BOM’s and ensure they are maintained and communicated timely and effectively

  • Assist in creating/maintaining development tools (POM manuals, costing masters)

  • Manage prototype, sales sample and production evaluations and approvals to ensure timelines and Smartwool quality standards are met.

  • Coordinate factory communications for all prototype development. Establish the timeline, raw material management and approval requirements with each factory

  • Co-manage the fit approval process with PLMs and designer

  • Support the Quality Assurance (QA) and Operations departments as appropriate

  • Coordinate with both internal and external merchandising / design/ development resources to achieve apparel category goals

  • Participate as part of the SWL apparel team to create the apparel development strategy and action plans to execute against the apparel team goals

  • Collaborate with Merchandising Director, Development Manager, and Operations Sourcing Manager to set the seasonal sourcing strategy

  • Identify sourcing, materials, and construction technology that supports seasonal merchandising and design direction

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Apparel, Textile Design, Merchandising, or Engineering preferred or equivalent, relative experience preferred

  • 5+ years' experience in apparel product development with keen understanding of design, fit, construction, and/or production

  • Requires demonstrated knowledge of apparel construction, material construction, pattern making, grading, and costing

  • Requires knit expertise. Wool experience preferred.

  • Requires fluent ability in both yarn development and knit garment execution

Requires full understanding of gauge, knit structures, and able to communicate with mills and sweater manufacturer to develop performance and fully fashion garments

  • Requires ability to execute on fit, cost engineering and guide merchandising and design teams in construction to achieve design intent and hit margin targets

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office with emphasis in Excel and familiarity with Adobe Illustrator

  • Proven ability to work effectively with designers to interpret design intent and offer alternative solutions to meet commercial objectives

  • Exceptional organization skills and communication

  • Demonstrated problem solving skill sets

  • Demonstrated performance history with offshore vendors and manufacturers

  • Exceptional attention to details

  • Proven ability to prepare and deliver detailed and complete product specs/spec packages

  • Knowledge of product fit and the proven ability to manage manufacturing partners on necessary fit changes

  • Ability to manage multiple seasonal calendars in a fast paced and dynamic environment

  • Ability and willingness to travel overseas

  • Extensive Asian experiences a plus
