Job summary:

We are looking for an Engineer to join Caterpillar’s Large Power Systems Division - Power Systems & Control Development (PS&CD) organization. Engineer’s are a key member of the generator set test development team. Their primary responsibilities will include providing technical support for developing next generation generator set products that run on diesel/gas. If you become an Engineer on our team, you will play a key role in developing technologies that maximize generator set performance while minimizing exhaust emissions.

You will enjoy this role if you like working in a dynamic environment and on a broad range of generator set applications (Electric Power, Marine and Oil & Gas) across multiple LPSD platforms (C27/C32, 3500, 3600, C175). You will have significant responsibility of delivering critical deliverables such as generator set performance, product compliance, system/component validation and capital upgrades & maintenance of the Technical Center development cells. You will have autonomy that includes the detailed daily management of test activities in these cells.

This highly visible role will provide you leadership opportunity in leading a broader group of engineers, technicians & other facility engineers in managing test assets at the Caterpillar Technical Center.

What you will do:

  • Execution of all generator set performance, validation & certification test activities

  • Writing Test instructions for generator set technicians for individual tests

  • Utilizing or developing standard test protocols & methods to deliver highest data quality

  • Maintaining generator set test cells to required safety & electrical compliance standards

  • Working with facility engineers on capital upgrades

  • Supporting the operators & technicians in generator set installation activities & completing critical cell electrical transformer, load-bank, electrical cables installation & intake/exhaust routing designs

  • Ensure the appropriate generator set test cell systems are active in test. Engine & generator specific components are appropriately instrumented

  • Analyzing test results for performance calibration trade-off curves, perform mechanical & structural instrumentation data reporting, provide root cause analysis of un-expected deviations observed in test data captured

  • Ensure tests are run on schedule & provide weekly updates to management on progress of their projects

  • Provide high quality documentation of work accomplished is required with report out to stakeholders in forums such as Table Top, Deep Dives & Design reviews

Skills you must have:

  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

  • Technical Excellence: Extensive knowledge of engine systems and/or generator sets and the testing operations (test setup, execution, and result reporting) for either.

  • Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.

  • Product Testing: Knowledge of product testing approaches, techniques and tools; ability to design, plan and execute testing strategies and tactics to ensure product quality at all stages of manufacturing.

  • Troubleshooting Technical Problems: knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.

  • Education: Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or Material Science OR equivalent experience working in an engineering function

Top candidates will also have:

  • Experiences with Test Acquisition Data systems (FEV, AVL, National Instruments, Horiba, I-Test

  • Engine component design & test experience (Pistons, Turbos, Exhaust Manifolds, etc…)
