BAE Systems Ship Repair Deputy Chief Counsel in Norfolk, Virginia
Leads the Ship Repair business unit legal organization, inclusive of all Ship Repair businesses. Proactively advises and provides legal services to company management in all of the wide ranging areas where business legal issues arise - government, international and commercial contract issues, organization and personnel, real estate, licensing, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, litigation, environmental, and other compliance matters. Coordinates, creates, implements, motivates, directs, and manages the department and employees within Legal. Ensures that the business is in compliance and ethical within corporate and governmental directives, policies, regulations, and laws in its transactions to protect the company against potential claims and litigation.
Advises the business with respect to compliance with international, federal and state laws and regulations applicable to doing business as a global defense contractor. Works as a partner with the business to facilitate compliance with international laws, and federal and state regulations. Advises management of new legislation and government regulations which might affect operations. Selects, Prepares and performs various legal training courses to company personnel, as required.
Drafts, reviews and/or oversees the drafting of a wide range of legal/contractual documents, including, but not limited to, contracts, including commercial, international and government contract documents, non-disclosure agreements, teaming agreements, acquisition and disposition agreements, leases, licenses, and purchase and sales agreements.
Provides legal advice to business and management personnel. Formulates and recommends operating policies and objectives or changes in existing policies and procedures to ensure compliance with corporate, ethics, governmental regulations, and laws.
Functions as liaison between management and outside legal counsel. Instructs, and supervises outside counsel; oversees litigation; and plans and negotiates the disposition of disputes. Represents the company in a broad range of contacts with federal, state, and local governments and agencies and with public interest groups.
Develops a high performing team and shares responsibility of self-development with immediate supervisor. Manages legal department to ensure objectives are achieved and within established budget.
Participates in professional associations. Develops and presents training materials and courses for employee workforce on a variety of legal and other functional topics.
Develops expertise in laws and regulations that affect BAE Systems business.
Maintains a safe work environment and ensures compliance with safety objectives and policies.
Conducts internal investigations, under the supervision of the Chief Counsel; partners with Ethics, Human Resources, Security, International Compliance and other functions as appropriate.
