Cargill’s Agricultural Supply Chain – North America (CASC NA) connects agricultural producers to food, feed and industrial customers through a seamless supply chain. We help our customers compete in the global market and efficiently deliver products from origins to destinations through our marketing, sourcing, originating, storing, trading, consulting and processing of grain, oilseeds and crop inputs products and solutions. CASC NA business reaches across Canada, United States & Mexico with an expansive asset footprint including over 200 grain elevators, export/import facilities, oilseed crush plants, biodiesel facilities, and farm service centers.

Position Overview:

The Grain Rail Sourcing Lead is responsible for sourcing rail rates to enable the business group to compete in the marketplace. In this position you will be responsible for working with merchants and regional managers to uncover and pursue rail opportunities. In coordination with the Business Transportation Lead (BTL), you will work closely with the rail pipeline managers and rail freight trader to ensure that the business has enough rail equipment (private & rail owned) to meet the needs of the business. You will work with the other sourcing leads in CTL to create value through analyzing rail rates, developing pricing strategies, leading rate negotiations, understanding market dynamics, forecasting rate trends and developing relationships with railroad marketing managers. Where appropriate, you will represent Cargill on rail transportation committees.

Principal Accountabilities:

40% - Drive value by understanding the needs of the business group and sourcing rail rates that will enable the business unit to compete in the marketplace. Support merchants to help them achieve their game plans. Work with merchants to coordinate approach with the marketing people at the Class I carriers. Stay up to date on market developments, rate spreads, commodity prices and physical commodity/product flows. Works with BTL and Regional Managers to uncover and pursue rail infrastructure opportunities between the Class I carriers and Cargill. Provide expert knowledge to negotiate and/or manage the negotiation process for businesses with Class I carriers.

25% - Applies expert knowledge of the rail industry and freight car programs to help facilitate the supply of cars to meet the needs of the business. In coordination with the Business Transportation Lead, assist pipeline managers & Rail Freight Trader in developing and implementing rail car S & D’s. Work with the Rail Fleet Manager in CTL to procure private cars as needed. Uses advanced knowledge and past experiences to resolve issues with carriers as needed.

20% - Develop and maintain strategic relationships with marketing directors from the Class I carriers. Assist in developing strategies for each of these carriers. Where appropriate, represent Cargill’s interests on rail transportation committees.

15% - Applies an expert understanding of rail pricing practices and tariffs to identify areas of improvement and cost management. Works closely with Rail Analyst to develop tools and best practices for helping to manage freight books.

Qualifications

Required skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in business, logistics, transportation, supply chain management or a related degree

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a transportation sourcing role or related supply chain experience

  • Experience with customer and vendor relationship management

  • Proven negotiation skills

  • Financial acumen, including strong analytical skills; experience with scorecards/metrics

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated strong client and customer focus

  • Must be legally entitled to work for Cargill in the United States

Preferred skills:

  • Experience in merchandising agricultural commodities

  • Experience working with railroad tariffs or with rail rates

  • Experience partnering with senior leaders and businesses to understand strategies/requirements and translating them into priority actions

  • Proven decision making and problem solving skills

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently; ability to understand and prioritize business issues
