The Opportunity

This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in the GES Global Engineering Services Division.

The primary function of the Manager, Capital Planning is to effectively manage the Capital Process for Corporate Engineering (CE) in partnership with area management and have visibility to the leadership team in GES/AQR. Responsibilities include development of the annual capital plan, managing the reviews and tracking approvals of all Requests for Capital Expenditures (RCEs), project cashflow management and reporting, collaborating with functional leaders to prioritize initiatives and elevate for decision making appropriately, publishing of Monthly/Quarterly Dashboard reports and engaging with the appropriate stakeholders to understand expectations and set targets, etc. The primary goal is to ensure that all functional groups that need access to capital have the support necessary to properly prioritize their needs, understand the steps needed to advance through the process including authorization as well as appropriate tracking once approved.

This position is an Individual Contributor role which will require a balance between working directly on elements that get high level visibility as well as providing the necessary and required reporting information to ensure that there is visibility and transparency into all phases of capital planning. This position will also work collaboratively with Finance, CE PMO, Engineering Leadership, as well as multiple other Abbott Corporate functions. This role will engage with all functional groups of CE across multiple continents and time zones, requiring flexibility in work hours, strategies as well as cultural sensitivities.

What You’ll Work On

CAPITAL PLANNING

  • Provide governance and guidance to the overall CE Capital Process.

  • Provide hands on support to the CE operating groups in developing necessary capital justification and capital prioritization scenarios with an ability to understand scope for key, proposed capital projects.

  • Lead Capital Plan development for future capital years and collaborate with all applicable cross functional groups to deliver overall CE Capital Plan Proposal.

  • Lead meetings to align pre-funding and planning efforts across the areas.

  • Manage and develop communication of all Capital related executive level documents (Requests for Capital Expenditures, Supporting summary documents, Capital Dashboards, Scope Changes, Supplemental Requests, etc.)

  • Track, trend and streamline capital related metrics, including cash flow.

  • Provide standardized reporting formats for alignment across the CE areas, and with Finance.

  • Participate in Monthly Area Project Review meetings and MBRs.

METRICS AND BENCHMARKING

  • Create Best in Class Capital and Project metrics across the CE network that drives visibility and measurable improvements.

  • Collaborate with Corporate and Divisional resources to apply key learnings in other areas.

  • Benchmark with industry best practices and performance metrics.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCE

  • While not required, a strong understanding of technical concepts will be beneficial in this role as most of the projects being supported by the organization are in support of CE’s long-range infrastructure program.

ORGANIZATIONAL INTERFACE

  • The role must have demonstrated executive level communications, both verbal and written. Must be able to take very technical topics and create descriptions that are easily understood.

  • The role needs to demonstrate high levels of flexibility to meet the changing needs of the business across the globe as well as command over the current state of capital.

  • The role must work closely with Finance to champion CE’s capital needs and provide supporting documentation for requests.

  • The role must have a strong partnership with management to support the area’s CapEx needs.

  • Participate in the Capital Council.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required, with a preference for atechnical or business focus.

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressively increasing responsibility.

  • Capital Project Management Experience that includes forecasting and cash flow experience.

  • Strong financial knowledge and analytical skills. Strong team leadership, organizational efficiencies, and executive level communications.

  • Ability to work within a high-performance, cross-functional organization with extremely tight timelines and aggressive goals.

  • Demonstrated problem solving ability in cross-functional environment.

  • Advanced MS Excel skills.

  • Proficiency in Power BI is preferred.

  • Exposure to Strategic Planning with demonstrated experience in prioritization techniques will be crucial.

  • Highly proficient in both verbal and written communication.

  • Ability to communicate to upper levels of management on both issues that affect current operations (both positive and negative), and on opportunities to improve our processes.

  • Excellent teamwork and ability to function across multiple areas of the business.

The base pay for this position is $95,000.00 – $190,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
