The Opportunity

Abbott is looking for a Senior Manager, Sustainability Communications to join our team. This position works out of our Abbot Park location in the Public Affairs Division.

What You’ll Work On

Primary Job Function

The Senior Manager, Sustainability Communications will play a pivotal role in helping formulate, execute and sustain an external communications strategy for Abbott that positions the company as a global leader in sustainability. This position requires a strategic thinker and creative storyteller who has demonstrated the ability to develop and execute communications programs, conduct strategic media relations, and manage multiple stakeholders in a fast-moving environment. The right candidate will be an excellent writer with a global mindset who is able to understand and shape complex topics into compelling stories across traditional, digital and social channels. This person should have experience in securing positive media coverage to advance company reputation, ideally on sustainability, corporate citizenship and/or policy-related topics.

Core Job Responsibilities

• Position Abbott as a global sustainability leader through proactive external storytelling.

• Cultivate a deep understanding of, and build strong relationships with, media and social media influencers through thoughtful, strategic engagement related to sustainability topics and corporate reputation.

• Key message development and positioning.

• Manage sustainability-related communications programs, media interviews and events.

• Manage relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, serving as a trusted business partner and providing strategic communications counsel.

• Create content across multiple channels to highlight Abbott’s sustainability initiatives.

• Protect the company’s reputation.

Position Accountability / Scope

• The senior manager will report to the Senior Director, Sustainability, Cybersecurity and Issues Communications.

• Readiness to travel 15%+ annually.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience / Training Required

• More than 10 years of experience in external communications, citizenship/policy and/or media relations, with a deep understanding of how to use external communications to enhance company reputation.

• Specific experience in sustainability communications, including external communications planning and execution around access to healthcare, environment/EHS, governance, policy, issues or related topics strongly preferred.

• Experienced creative storyteller, skilled at developing and executing multi-channel communications programs to drive awareness and engagement.

• Strong contacts and working relationships with a variety of top tier media.

• Excellent writer and communicator who can organize, summarize, clarify and communicate ideas simply, succinctly and accurately.

• Skilled at building stakeholder trust and providing strategic counsel.

• Able to achieve results while dealing with ambiguity and a rapid pace of change.

• A bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, business, marketing or related field.

The base pay for this position is $125,300.00 – $250,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
