The Opportunity
This position works out of our Alameda, CA location in the Diabetes Care division where we're focused on helping people with diabetes manage their health with life-changing products that provide accurate data to drive better-informed decisions. We’re revolutionizing the way people monitor their glucose levels with our new sensing technology.
The Senior Sustaining Engineer will independently, or in a leadership capacity, drive product improvement initiatives for critical electrical designs in medical products. This role involves exercising independent judgment to identify, recommend, and implement significant and complex electrical design enhancements that meet existing product and regulatory standards. The Senior Sustaining Engineer will lead technical reviews of electrical design updates in collaboration with cross-functional R&D teams and develop networks across various departments, ensuring effective communication with senior management.
What You’ll Work On
Identify and qualify alternate electronic components based on market availability and ability to update designs if needed.
Mentor Junior Engineers in failure investigations.
Identify causes of customer complaint trends, and manufacturing yield losses.Update and qualify designs as needed.
Specify, design, verify and validate new electrical designs, in accordance with applicable medical regulatory standards.
Create in Altium schematics, gerbers, assemblies, and design files and release into document control system.
Responsible for the development of electrical project plans and schedules covering engineering activities (Meeting all design control and process/product development SOP requirements)
Works in the development of significant product specifications, design FMEAs, DOEs, and validation protocols.
Communicate effectively and participate on cross functional development teams.
Participate in technical design reviews for electrical designs and product design and requirements documents.
Act as independent reviewer on programs in which not directly involved.
Ensures that electrical designs and test equipment meet all applicable standards.
Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and performing other duties as assigned by management
Strong knowledge of EMI/EMC regulations required for regulatory compliance in medical devices.
Responsible for conducting EMC testing both internally and with external partners.
Required Qualifications
BS degree in Engineering Discipline (Electrical or Physics preferred), or equivalent relevant
8+ years of relevant experience.
Good knowledge of general engineering principles.
Solid knowledge of regulations for medical device development, including ISO 13485 and FDA standards.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Extensive understanding of processes used in the design and manufacturing of medical devices, particularly handheld devices.
Experience in:
Performing complex engineering calculations and relating results to controlled tests, including statistical and tolerance analysis.
Working in a development environment with a focus on medical product development.
Writing process/product requirements and design specifications.
Working on cross-functional development teams with an emphasis on minimizing time to market.
Designing high-volume handheld electronic products with DFX and cost considerations.
Solid understanding of GxP, ISO, and medical device regulations, particularly in the context of developing new products/processes in a regulated environment.
Strong technical experience in Electrical Engineering or a relevant discipline.
Strong knowledge of EMI/EMC testing and regulatory compliance for medical devices.
Preferred Qualifications
Some experience in engineering management or technical leadership desirable.

The base pay for this position is $112,000.00 – $224,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
