The Senior Automation Engineer performs a variety of engineering functions requiring a wide diversity of technical knowledge involving automation / controls improvement and supporting the introduction of new equipment and new products into manufacturing production. Provide technical leadership in the development of automated control systems. Serve as a consultant in area of expertise to other personnel. Will work closely with project manager or be the project manager for significant automated equipment procurement, install and qualification. Will be part of a highly skilled engineering team with an expectation to travel globally, to support the business. Work within a cross functional multi-discipline team environment supporting operations, quality, safety and other engineering functions to support production performance, asset management and improvements in product quality performance. Participates within project teams, provide technical support and make informed decisions on hardware and architecture selection. Provide support to operations and other functions for automation related issues on the production lines. Prioritize multiple tasks while working to tight schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop high quality software controls solutions from Functional and Detailed Design Specifications

  • Responsible for development, installation, validation and support of the software and automation control systems within an automated validated manufacturing plant.

  • Develop needed process documentation to establish software integration strategy, and assists with performing bench tests, basic software integration tests, regression tests, and smoke tests etc.

  • Review existing software to identify opportunities to improve overall productivity & efficiency in build/release management.

  • Provide secure scalable and sustainable solutions to enhance safety quality or throughput for legacy production systems

  • Design install and validate automated solutions for new or retrofit equipment

  • Fault-find complex automation equipment

  • Participates on or lead project teams as part of a cross functional team to deliver projects

  • Provide technical support as subject matter expert as necessary for complex problem resolution

  • Works with manager / team lead to develop and implement strategic engineering Goals & Objectives.

  • Develop validation documents to support the automation development process

  • Operate in conformance to site quality and health and safety standards at all times.

  • Support the implementation of all engineering and plant strategic initiatives May be required to: Monitor project plans and schedules to ensure deliverables are on time and within budget.

  • Identify and manage internal and external resources to support assigned projects.

  • Monitor and analyze opportunities for the development of new or improved tools for process improvement activities.

  • Provide moderately complex technical consultation and leadership to multidisciplinary teams. Provide training and mentoring to less experienced staff.

  • Identify and lead cost and technical improvements to deliver continuous improvement across the site.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent University degree required; focused degree in an Engineering, Computer Science or Software Engineering disciplines preferred

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant work experience

  • Experience working with automated controls systems in a highly automated, regulated manufacturing environment

  • Extensive experience programming, integrating and troubleshooting automated solutions.

  • Solid understanding of software development principles, design patterns and best practices.

  • Strong proficiency in C/C programming language.

  • Ability to work in a cross functional/matrix team environment

  • Change management and project development experience in an FDA regulated environment

  • Computer System Validation (CSV) experience

  • This position requires a highly motivated self-starter

  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred:

  • Knowledge in IT networks Architecture and functionality

  • Knowledge of SQL Databases

  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex software issues.

  • Proven experience in developing multithreaded systems and following Software Development Life Cycle.

  • Experience with motion control (servo systems, robotics etc), Staubli Robots, laser printing and Cognex vision systems, fieldbus communications (Profibus, DeviceNet, ASi etc), and Safety PLCs

  • Experience working with automated metro-logy systems in a highly automated, regulated manufacturing environment

  • PLC, and SCADA platforms knowledge including Beckhoff, Schneider ELAU, Rockwell Automation RsLogix5000/Factory Talk, Siemens S7, Pilz PSS WinPro, Ignition and Zenon HMI

Other:

  • May require up to 10% domestic and/or international travel to other locations and sites.
