Lockheed Martin Staff Scientist / Flow Battery Chemistry & Physical Methods / Andover in Andover, Massachusetts

Description: Lockheed Martin Energy is commercializing a new flow battery technology for low-cost, grid-scale energy storage to support renewable energy integration and grid modernization. The flow battery is based on a novel battery chemistry comprising aqueous metal-ligand coordination compounds.

-We are seeking a Staff Scientist to contribute to flow battery technology development.

-In this exciting role the Staff Scientist will have the opportunity to work closely with an interdisciplinary team of chemists and other engineering disciplines.

Elements of job scope will include:

-Development of flow battery sensors (e.g. pH and state of charge) that can be productized for commercial deployment, along with flow battery control schemes that enable stable product operation at affordable costs.

-Development of new methods for characterization of flow battery chemistry reactivity and stability as a function of state conditions of the battery (e.g. pH, state of charge, temperature, etc).

-Design and execution of battery and/or materials tests to assist with root cause investigation / corrective action development for various battery failure modes.

-Development of methodologies for analysis of battery test data to support ongoing development activities.

-Interface with Quality and other Engineering functions to drive recommended technology and/or process changes into product design and/or operations.

-Future efforts may include development of novel battery materials and flow battery electrolytes.

-The scientist will have the opportunity to mentor less experienced team members and attend industry conferences to keep up-to-date on related industry best practices and technological advancements

The Locale: Andover Massachusetts is a charming suburb of Boston located about 25 miles northwest of that city. Andover is very close to historic Lowell Massachusetts and to Salem, New Hampshire. Andover is within reach of New Hampshire’s White Mountains and awesome ski areas to the north, and the scenic coastal towns of MA and NH which lie about 45 minutes to the east. This scenic colonial region offers lots of New England charm, great schools, shopping, and restaurants. Andover and the region share an impressive past from the early days after the pilgrims arrived in Plymouth to the revolutionary war. Where can you get to from Andover? Andover is about 90 minutes from Cape Cod. Boston is about 30 minutes to the south without traffic. New York City is about 4.5 hours away from Andover. Waterville Valley and other major ski resorts of New Hampshire and Vermont are about 2 to 3 hours to the north. It should be noted that Andover, Massachusetts is approximately 25 miles north of the Boston metropolitan area and offers better access to a wide range of substantially more affordable regions in the area to live. Those regions include Northeastern and North Central Massachusetts, and Southern, New Hampshire.

Basic Qualifications:

-PhD in a field of chemistry, chemical engineering, or applied physics.

-The ability to be flexible and the ability to adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

-Deep technical understanding of physical methods associated with characterization of inorganic and organic molecules and materials.

-Knowledge of chemical or flow related sensors is required.

-The ability to work independently and as part of a team.

-Must be a US Citizen or US Permanent Resident.

Desired Skills:

-A Background in inorganic chemistry is preferred.

-Experience with probe-based and/or optical measurements of pH, chemistry, and temperature is strongly desired.

-Industry experience (3+ years) in a materials development and / or chemical sensor development role.

-Knowledge of materials science would be a plus.

-Working knowledge of flow battery operation, chemistries, and materials of construction would be a plus.

-Knowledge of or access to materials compatibility databases and standard practices for materials compatibility screening and evaluation.

-Demonstrated experience in designing development of analytical chemistry-based methodologies to meet the needs of an engineered device that performs a function in the marketplace.
