Job Description:
The External Reporting Controller is responsible for reviewing external financial reports before filing with the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC). He/She conducts research on new accounting standards and determines the impact to the company and is responsible for complex accounting areas and transactions. This position supervises managers.
Job Duties
Prepares SEC filings and reviews financial data, calculations and disclosures contained within the filings.
Coordinates with external auditors to ensure accuracy and completeness of filings.
Provides input into external financial communications and verifies information for accuracy (e.g. earnings press release, analyst conference call scripts, etc.).
Reviews other financial and regulatory materials for accuracy and completeness prior to communication externally.
Prepares presentations for the Audit Committee and senior management on complex financial topics.
Performs research for technical accounting issues to ensure SEC and other statutory filings comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), SEC disclosure requirements and other applicable guidance.
Prepares documentation on accounting treatment for complex technical issues and coordinates with external auditors on these issues during their audit.
Prepares and reviews updates to the company’s internal accounting policies and procedures to ensure that accounting personnel have access to current UPS policies.
Provides updates to senior management on new and proposed accounting guidance, and the potential impact on the company.
Leads and Develops Others
Manages people processes (e.g. performance management, career development, training, etc.).
Identifies individual and team skill gaps and developmental opportunities to facilitate individual and team development.
Ensures that direct and indirect reports have documented performance goals and detailed plans to achieve those goals.
Provides frequent performance feedback in a consistent, fair, and objective manner to facilitate open communication and encourage continuous performance improvement.
Holds others accountable to established performance levels to achieve individual and group goals and maintain consistent practices across the organization.
Resolves individual and group performance issues in accordance with policies and procedures.
Coaches’ others and provides ongoing feedback and support.
Identifies opportunities to involve others in new and challenging work assignments that advance the skills and capabilities of individuals and the organization.
Reviews Accounting Entries and Related Documentation
Reviews accounting entries and documentation for complex accounting areas (e.g. stock-based compensation, derivatives, leasing).
Reviews certain annual and quarterly accounting processes.
Provides supporting documentation and other materials to the external auditors for annual and quarterly audit and review processes.

Writes complex technical documents; advises others in improving technical writing skills; identifies emerging issues in the field of technical writing in specialized area of expertise.
Education
Bachelor’s degree - Accounting Required
Master’s degree - Accounting Preferred
Certification - Certified Public Accountant Required
