Scope of Position:

DuPont is a global science company dedicated to solving challenging global problems, with operations in over 70 countries. DuPont - Facilities Services and Real Estate seeks a Facilities Engineer to provide leadership and technical support at our Larkin Center Laboratory site in Midland, Michigan and Laboratory site in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

This Larkin site hosts research operations from the various Dupont businesses and third-party tenants. The Auburn Hills site hosts research operations for the DuPont Adhesives business. The Facilities Engineer is responsible for technical competency and stewardship for the buildings in their respective service center through the continuous improvement of reliability, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of the building systems. The building systems comprise of HVAC, domestic water, deionized water, centralized vacuum systems, life safety systems, chilled water, steam, sanitary and storm piping, and building automation systems.

The Facilities Engineer reports directly to the Facility Supervisor and is primarily based in Midland, Michigan with periodic travel to the Auburn Hills location. This position has regular contact with capital project teams, maintenance mechanics, contractors, management staff, maintenance management, internal customers, and EHS (Environmental, Health and Safety).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide Engineering support in maintaining and improving the buildings. This includes troubleshooting problem equipment or systems, ensuring compliance with all acceptable codes, regulations, and safety and provide support for contractual and Building Automation Services.

  • Be proactive in providing a safe, comfortable environment for the internal customers including maintaining proper indoor air quality, providing energy efficient systems and reliable equipment.

  • Develop a strategic 5-year capital plan for the buildings; assess building and equipment conditions. Assist in developing scope of work for projects to ensure that the infrastructure can support any new equipment. Commission new equipment and systems.

  • Energy – Maintain and operate buildings in an energy efficient manner. Be proactive in developing new opportunities to save energy on site. Identify and implement improvement projects to increase facility system reliability and efficiency.

  • Document management – Maintain the accuracy and continue to develop as necessary the master drawings. Supports site in complying with the Mechanical Integrity standards, maintains site information on mechanical integrity.

  • Uses maintenance spending, reliability, and maintenance metrics for assigned area. Understands objectives of the Facility Maintenance Strategy for assigned areas and relevant history of equipment failures.

  • Analyzes impact of equipment failures on maintenance spending to identify improvement opportunities. Initiates reliability related PSSRs (Pre-startup Safety Review) and effectively implement change in coordination with appropriate leadership. Analyzes and troubleshoots maintenance spending in assigned area with coaching.

  • Consult with the maintenance team on developing preventive maintenance plans for existing and new equipment. Ensures quality, service and product performance information is entered into the reporting system.

  • Oversee construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems and components.

  • Site focal point for machine risk safety standards and programs. Coordinates with EHS Delivery and Business equipment owners to ensure proper safety protocols are followed.

Skills / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering preferred). Comparable previous experience may be considered.

  • Experience and knowledge in HVAC and BAS (Building Automation System).

  • Understanding the theory for sizing, specifying, assessing the condition, and troubleshooting the following: Fans, blowers, pumps, heating and cooling coils, filters, humidifiers, de-humidifiers, air distribution systems (duct design, air balance, relative pressurization, laminar flow), industrial exhaust (heat removal, laboratory fume hoods and bio hoods, and dust capture, containment and removal), clean rooms, chillers, cooling towers.

  • Good oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively use computer tools is a necessity.

  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills, ability to influence others and work effectively in a team environment with people at all jobs levels that are culturally diverse.

  • The ability to understand project goals and requirements, understand business objectives, work independently, manage multiple jobs simultaneously, organize work, set priorities, and train or mentor others.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and tasks in a changing environment to meet challenging business needs.

Preferred Knowledge:

  • 2 years minimum in laboratory and comfort HVAC design, operations, engineering, or consultation.

  • Related building technologies including fire protection, water treatment, electrical distribution, electrical classification, process hazards, civil, structural, and architectural engineering.

  • Occupational health and industrial hygiene issues related to HVAC systems and equipment, including Indoor Air Quality.

  • General knowledge of applicable standards such as: ASME, ASHRAE, OSHA, NFPA, NEC, SMACNA, Michigan Energy, Mechanical, Plumbing, Building & Fire Codes.

  • Running reports and accessing information from the SAP PM computerized maintenance management system.

  • Improving reliability of equipment, processes, facilities, and controls utilizing value added preventive maintenance tasks, effective utilization of predictive and other nondestructive testing methodologies, and performance of root cause failure analysis of equipment failures.

  • Reviewing, modifying, and developing piping and instrumentation diagrams.

  • Knowledge of the various building systems associated with research laboratory and office facilities.
