The Emergency Department consists of a 41 bed unit with an average of 90,000 patients per year. The patient population includes pediatrics, general medical, primary stroke, Level II trauma and Cardiac. SAMC has a very busy Level II trauma program, with the ER treating large numbers of acute MI and stroke patients as well. SAMC is a Malcom Baldridge facility of excellence Center providing exceptional care for every patient. Our conveyance area provides even faster service for our low acuity patient without the wait in the main emergency area.
Our staff consists of physicians, RN's, and technicians. All of our nursing and technical staff is currently certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and many RN's are currently certified in pediatric care (PALS or ENPC). Many of our nurses have attained their CEN certification and CCRN certifications.
The Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes the nursing process to direct and deliver comprehensive nursing care to patients on an assigned unit in a safe and proficient manner according to individual patient needs. Provides direct patient care based upon South Austin Medical Center Hospital Standards of Care and Standards of Practice, Polices, Procedures and Practice Guidelines. Provides guidance and supervision to Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN), Nursing Technicians, Nursing Assistants and Unit Secretaries. He/she acts as patient and advocate with the Hospital environment. Assumes Charge Nurse responsibilities and accepts assignments on other units when necessary.
Possess the comprehensive nursing skills to perform triage assessment that shall include rapid systematic collection of data related to the patients chief complaint (will complete Healthstream course within 6 months of hire.)
A complete and thorough triage assessment is performed and documented using the nursing process at the time of presentation, based on accepted emergency nursing standards, on patient condition and hospital policy.
Differentiates severity of patient problems and prioritizes care, designating an appropriate acuity level.
Facilitates the flow of patients through the emergency care system ensuring timely evaluation according to the health care needs and acuity of the patients.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills in the care of all aspects of medical and traumatic emergencies. Considers principles of emergency nursing assessment while formulating appropriate nursing interventions for the disease/trauma entity.
Assesses injury causation which may implicate any form of abuse or neglect i.e. child abuse, child neglect, elder abuse, elder neglect, or domestic violence. Assures neglect or injury is reported to the appropriate agency for intervention.
Priorities of care are established and based on presenting medical history, past medical history, nursing observations and assessments. Priorities of care are re-evaluated and reestablished as the patient’s condition warrants.
Documentation is consistent, complete, thorough and in accordance with emergency nursing standards and hospital policy. Documentation includes the outcome of nursing interventions and patient responses.
The patient and /or significant other are informed about the diagnostic process of care, with explanations given regarding nursing interventions and procedures to be performed.
Reviews physician’s orders and implements orders within a reasonable time according to patient acuity and hospital policy.
Possess knowledge of legal aspects of death in the Emergency Department in accordance with state laws and Emergency Department procedures in reporting deaths.
Annual competencies completed for Fire/safety, infection control, blood borne pathogens, hazardous materials, I.V. conscious sedation and those designated by emergency department Education and Management.
Demonstrates safe, effective working knowledge of Emergency Department equipment.
Demonstrates knowledge of emergency nursing procedures which may be affected by the age of the patient.
Directly applies pediatric/geriatric standards to medication administration, I.V. infusion, and treatments as described in hospital policy and procedure.
Demonstrates knowledge and skill in the care of orthopedic patients.
Demonstrates knowledge of orthopedic procedures as well as casts, splints, slings, etc
Demonstrate understanding of HCA’s and “Patients First” safety initiative by strict compliance to all safety protocols and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing required
- Completion of or actively pursuing a BSN degree preferred
- At least 1 year of RN experience required
At least 2 years of Emergency Department or other Critical Care nursing experience preferred
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Active Registered Nurse license by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners required. If compact license held, RN is required to obtain a Texas RN license within 90 days of their hire date.
- Current BLS certification required
- Current ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire date
- TNCC required within 12 months of hire date
- ENPC and/or PALS required within 12 months of hire date
