Alexion Pharmaceuticals Intern, QP-Mathematical Modeling in Boston, Massachusetts
Some opportunities happen only once in a lifetime - like a job where you have the chance to change lives. At Alexion, people living with rare and devastating diseases are our Guiding Star. We are driven to continuously innovate and create meaningful value in all we do to help patients and families fully live their best lives. We value the uniqueness and diversity of our employees and recognize that nurturing the diverse perspectives and strengths of our people translates into innovative breakthroughs for patients.
This is what you will do:
The Quantitative Pharmacology (QP) – Mathematical Modeling summer intern will help further Alexion/QP department’s Quantiative Systems Pharmacology (QSP) initiative to support development efforts for Alexion’s innovative drug pipeline. In the process, the intern will gain valuable experience in the development and application of Modeling & Simulation (M&S) tools relevant to model-informed drug development for patients with rare diseases.
Specifically, we are seeking individuals with some of the traits listed below:
Experience with one or more of the following topics: ordinary differential equations, numerical optimization, probability & statistics.
Experience (or keen interest in) learning about complement pathway biology.
Experience in building and validating M&S work-flows that simulate response of complex systems (as relevant to the candidate’s domain), using a both bottom-up first principles-based as well as top-down data-informed perspectives.
Good communication, collaboration, and people skills.
Past experience with multidisciplinary research and with solution-oriented learning by doing in areas that were new (to the candidate) under minimal supervision.
You will be responsible for:
M&S activities related to complement pathway dynamics with rare disease drug development focus
- Review of relevant literature on complement pathway biology and its role in rare disease.
Encode and validate relevant analysis subroutines to support an existing QSP M&S work flow.
Apply a QSP M&S work-flow to simulate disease state and response to pharmacological perturbations, and compare with available knowledge.
Document literature review, code, and analyses findings.
Work closely with and receive guidance from relevant team members of the Alexion-AZ RDU QP team on the above duties
You will need to have:
Must be Masters/PhD-level student working towards a degree in the Sciences or in Engineering and with computational research focus in the areas of: Systems Biology, Biological Engineering, Biological and Biomedical sciences, Biochemistry and Molecular biology, Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics/Mathematics/Statistics/Econometrics, or related fields.
Must possess the required work authorization for the country location of the assignment.
Must be 18 years of age or older at start of internship.
Must currently have a 3.0 GPA or equivalent.
The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. As is typical of an office-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to: use a computer; engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; engage in problem solving and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue; collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours. Occasional remote work, if necessary, is OK.
Experience with coding and simulating ordinary differential equation (ODE)-based models in Matlab
Experience with numerical optimization using local and/or global optimization tools
Basic/operational knowledge of dynamical systems analysis and related tools: Stability, Jacobian and Hessian matrix calculation and properties, Stiff ODEs, steady-state analysis, eigenvalues and eigenvectors.
Basic/operational knowledge of random variables/vectors, and (multivariate) probability distributions and related sampling tools.
We would prefer for you to have:
Past experience in one or more of the items below:
One or more among the following: R/Julia/Python/SAS
Sensitivity analysis, identifiability analysis with regard to ODE-based models
Operational knowledge of one or more statistical estimation techniques,
Uncertainty Quantification theory and tools: uncertainty characterization and uncertainty propagation in Forward and Inverse models, preferably ODE-based.
Parallel computing knowledge using high performance computing clusters
Author contributions to research manuscript(s).
Basic/operational knowledge of one or more of the items below (desirable, but not a pre-requisite):
Complement Pathway of the immune system
Rate laws and Michelis-Menten kinetics of biochemical reactions
Physiological based pharmacokinetic M&S
