The Opportunity

This position works out of our Pleasanton, CA or Burlington, MA location in the Heart Failure Division. Abbott’s Heart Failure (HF) team is focused on helping people with heart failure manage their health and ultimately change and save lives.  The engineer will be primarily working on the CardioMEMS HF system, which remotely monitors changes in pulmonary artery (PA) pressure, an early indicator of the onset of worsening heart failure, to aid physicians in preventing worsening heart failure, lower heart failure mortality rates, and improve quality of life for our heart failure patients. The role is within the R&D organization charged with developing and releasing the next generations of CardioMEMS components while also supporting the current generation of products.

What You’ll Work On

  • Perform the layout, construction, and evaluation of a variety of prototype Printed Circuit Boards, other custom electronic components, fixtures, and tools.

  • Apply advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical problems.

  • Initiate the planning, organizing, performing, coordinating and/or directing of engineering work, both with internal teams and external suppliers.

  • Identify and routinely use the most effective, cost efficient and best practices to execute processes; continually evaluates their effectiveness and appropriateness.

  • Lay out and construct a variety of prototype tools, designs and tests required for development purposes.

  • Conduct evaluations, tests and analyses related to feasibility and function.

  • Perform troubleshooting and fault isolation activities on a variety of breadboards and other test benches.

  • Conduct measurements specified in design verification plans, documents and tabulates results, and provides engineering test reports.

  • Document custom tools with specifications, schematics and mechanical layouts to support document control and tool release.

  • Draft and iterate specifications for external suppliers (electronics components, ASICs, test development) to meet the design goals of CardioMEMS devices.

  • Independently plan, coordinate, and execute design and documentation activities in support of project goals.

  • Comply with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments.

  • Maintain positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical/electronic engineering or related engineering field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

  • Minimum 10 years relevant work experience in performing the layout, construction, and evaluation of a variety of prototype Printed Circuit Boards, fixtures and tools.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop new design features as part of existing systems.

  • Documented record of delivering tool engineering information which adds value to management’s decision making process.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable FDA regulations and Company operating procedures, processes, policies and tasks.

  • Advanced personal computer skills, including spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and specialized applications. Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.

  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.

  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.

  • Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner. Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.

  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced credential or professional certification in a relevant discipline/concentration desired. Six-Sigma knowledge and experience desired.

  • Training and experience in manufacturing processes and methods desired, especially in the manufacturing of medical devices.

  • Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross-division business unit model preferred.

The base pay for this position is $95,000.00 – $190,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
