The successful candidate will work with the Neuroscience Precision Biomarkers and Neuroscience Data Sciences teams to develop insights and tools for precision intervention using large variable data sets. These datasets could include high dimensionality molecular data, imaging and imaging-adjacent data, clinical and real-world data and data signatures from preclinical empirical sciences. The Principal Scientist will collaborate on AI/ML models and algorithms to support ongoing initiatives as well as to orchestrate newly emerging ones.

By leading and managing within a matrix organizational structure, you will play a key role in relationship building, effective communication, and influencing within the teaming environment.

Your ability to break down biological questions into solvable computational tasks, efficiently communicate and collaborate with both computational and biomedical scientists, and your passion to discover the next generation of medicines for diseases of the nervous system will be foundational to your success in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generates actionable insights from large biomedical datasets to support study design, biomarker discovery, and clinical translatability.

  • Acts as a developing subject matter expert to manage or contribute to translational medicine projects that support development programs.

  • Supports study design, protocol development and execution of clinical research studies in all phases of early development (Phase 0 to Phase 2a).

  • Strategic Agility: Understanding big picture, translating business concepts into short- and long-term deliverables, managing ambiguity and decision making.

  • Supports external collaborations and innovation projects, such as government funded projects or collaborative research programs, in support of a compound development program, translational strategy, DAS/TA strategy, or newly defined development or disease area opportunity.

  • Identifies critical risks and assumptions, to manage the mitigation planning.

  • Facilitates effective communication and ensures alignment between various teams and stakeholders.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with multidisciplinary team members.

  • Solves sophisticated problems through data analysis and interpretation.

  • Maintains a high degree of expertise of the internal & external environment to routinely analyze potential impact.

  • Assists in analyzing the utilization of biomarkers to support preclinical and/or clinical studies.

  • Ensures clinical and patient safety as well as regulatory compliance.

  • Builds a well-documented, efficient, collaboration-focused code base.

  • Works closely with the Senior Director, Neuroscience Translation on new AI/ML strategies and solutions for translational research.

  • Independently researches and evaluates datasets for translational value.

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD degree with 6 years of experience in computer science, machine learning, applied mathematics, bioinformatics or related field is highly preferred.

  • Proven track record in developing and deploying data science and machine learning solutions in the biomedical space is required.

  • Solid understanding of foundational machine learning concepts and algorithms is required.

  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, R is required.

  • Experience working in cloud-based environments (e.g. AWS, Azure, GCP) is required.

  • Solid analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and develop actionable insights and make independent decisions is required.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively convey complex ideas and strategic insights to stakeholders is required.

  • Strong communication, negotiation, and influencing skills to engage and align diverse stakeholders.

  • Problem-solving capabilities, with the capacity to align teams is required.

  • Previous experience in a matrix leadership or cross-functional leadership role is required.

  • Experience in AI/ML applications for early drug discovery is strongly preferred.

  • Experience working with foundation models and transfer learning is preferred.

  • Familiarity with data derived from human pre-clinical models, such as iPSC-derived cell lines is preferred.

  • Familiarity working with imaging and clinical data is preferred.

  • Familiarity with the Pharma value capture chain is preferred.

  • Up to 10% travel may be required.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $113,000 to $195,500.

Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program.

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

– Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year

– Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year

– Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year

– Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
