For more information, visit amwater.com and join American Water on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. _ Primary Role_ The Principal, Environmental Sustainability will play a crucial role in developing and implementing sustainability initiatives and programs that enhance company’s overall ESG goals and objectives. This role involves collaborating with various business and functional leads to promote environmentally friendly practices, energy management, reduce waste, and enhance overall sustainability efforts. They are responsible for developing and monitoring sustainability programs, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and reporting on performance metrics. By fostering a culture of sustainability, the Sustainability lead will contribute significantly to the overall success and resilience of the organization. _ Key Accountabilities_ * Develop and implement sustainability strategies and programs to reduce the organization’s environmental impact. * Monitor and report on compliance and conduct research to stay updated on environmental regulations to ensure the company adheres to both existing laws and emerging compliance requirements. * Ensuring cross-departmental / functional collaboration, requiring the lead to work closely with various teams to integrate eco-friendly practices across the organization. * Conduct regular assessments of sustainability practices and performance metrics to identify areas for improvement. * Manage and coordinate sustainability projects, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with all functional areas of the business. * Engage with internal and external stakeholders to promote sustainability efforts and gather feedback for continued improvement. Establish partnerships with local organizations and community groups to enhance sustainability outreach. * Organize training and educational programs to raise awareness about environmental sustainability practices and energy and waste optimization. * Prepare detailed reports and presentations for management, highlighting Sustainability achievements and future goals. _ Knowledge_ * Strong knowledge of the rule-making processes at both the state and federal levels for new water quality and environmental compliance regulations. * Strong knowledge and expertise in environmental policies and corporate sustainability, as well as current environmental policies that could impact the organization. * Strong knowledge of ESG frameworks and reporting. * Strong organizational and project management skills and exhibit strong leadership qualities. * Proven experience in sustainability program implementation within a corporate setting. _ Skills_ * Detail oriented with the ability to conduct thorough analysis and evaluations and render and implement timely decisions and recommendations. * Ability to understand and interpret complex regulatory rules and requirements and communicate those requirements (both written and orally) clearly and succinctly to others. * Ability to influence and work with non-direct reports, peers and management to gain alignment and achieve goals in a complex matrix environment. * Ability to read and interpret documents such as policies and regulations, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals and assess impact to the business. * Ability to write technical reports, prepare presentations and correspondence and to communicate relevant information verbally to all levels of the organization. * Strong strategic planning skills. * Strong understanding of sustainability principles and practices. * Strong project and program management skills, quantitative skills (analytical, technical, problem solving). * Strong written and verbal communications (fluency in report writing and presentations). * Interpersonal skills (persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting). * Leadership presence - ability to deal effectively and maintain cooperative and collaborative working relationships with senior management and other key stakeholders. _ Experience/Education_ * 12+ years of experience within a water and/or wastewater utility, engineering, or operations. * Experience in sustainability, environmental management, or corporate social responsibility. * Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, sustainability, engineering, or a related field is required. _ Certifications & Licenses_ * Valid Driver’s License * Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), the Certified Sustainability Professional (CSP), or the Sustainability Excellence Associate (SEA) or other Environmental professional certifications, strongly preferred _ Travel Requirements_ Up to 25%, as required _ Competencies_ Collaborates Cultivates innovation Customer obsessed Champions safety Drives Results Nimble learning * Join American Water...We Keep Life Flowing™ * American Water is firmly committed to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and prohibits employment discrimination for employees and applicants based on his or her age, race, color, pregnancy, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, marital status, citizenship, or because they are an individual with a disability, protected veteran or other status protected by federal, state, and local laws.
