Project Overview:

Bechtel currently manages the Mobile Launcher 2 Project which is the design and construction of a launch platform for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The purpose of ML2, located at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), is to provide a launch platform for the Space Launch System (SLS), an advanced launch vehicle that will fill America’s need for deep space missions.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will lead, implement, and maintain global construction field welding programs and provide specialized welding engineering support. Your technical advice will help ensure defects, behaviors, and other issues are rectified prior to final inspection. #LI-CL1

Major Responsibilities:

Field Welding Engineer

  • Coordinates work activities for Project Field Engineer and the Lead Field Welding Engineer in implementing the site welding program on medium projects.

  • Implements and maintains Bechtel Field Welding program for all welding operations.

  • Provides technical assistance to field superintendents and crafts.

  • Ensures that all supervision and craft personnel involved in welding operations are educated and aware of applicable code and project requirements.

  • Provides welding engineering support to ensure construction meets all code and Bechtel procedures.

  • Provides technical expertise for ASME, API, and AWS or other code designed and fabricated items.

  • Coordinates rod room and rod room attendant to ensure all weld filler materials are controlled and meet Bechtel and Code requirements.

  • Assists in the management of the NDE subcontract, including scheduling and coordination between construction and subcontractor.

  • Coordinates the welder qualification lab to ensure high quality welders are being employed.

  • Works with craft to maintain welding documentation and ensure the credibility/accountability of the Welding Program.

  • Supports the field inspections of welding work to ensure workmanship and materials are in conformance with project requirements.

  • Advises on recertification of quality behaviors and defects prior to final inspection.

  • Implements the project quality control program for welding.

  • Responsible for the requisitioning and set up of the welding consumables program.

  • Assists field procurement in inspection and receipt of welding materials.

  • Implements weld inspection tracking system using TEAMWorks/WITS applications.

  • Possesses working knowledge of Bechtel's corporate welding procedures / standards.

  • Supports the crafts in meeting cost and schedules.

  • Provides verification of materials, workmanship, and specification/code requirements.

  • Interfaces with the lead welding engineer for direction of work task assigned.

Additional Requirements for Welding Automation

  • Reviews site Welding and NDE subcontractor documentation of daily work for technical accuracy.

  • Performs visual and other examination methods in accordance with project developed procedures and standards.

  • Implements Design Automation deliverables.

  • Coordinates project welding and NDE software suites and databases.

  • Compiles cross project and GBU databases for key performance metrics.

  • Continues personnel development thru on the job training.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 5-8 years of relevant experience or 9-12 years of relevant work experience​.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Candidate should have a good working knowledge of current design codes and standards such as UPC, IBC, SMACNA, ASME, AWS, and NFPA.

  • Candidate should have a good working knowledge of welding technical and practical applications such as SMAW, GTAW, FCAW.

  • Sound knowledge base of environmental, safety and health compliance standards required on government projects.

  • Ability to provide clear and precise verbal and written communications with design engineers in order to assist with the project review.

  • Strong ability to read, understand, and interpret structural/mechanical/piping/electrical construction drawings.

  • Strong understanding of change management and configuration control processes.

  • Strong understanding of module assembly, completion walk-downs, testing, punch list management, turn over packages, and routine interface with Start-Up.

  • Knowledge of requirements for Lock Out Tag Out for safety.

  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications in accordance with current Bechtel standards.
