Note: this position may be filled as an Engineer III or one level higher as a Senior Engineer dependent upon the selected candidate's experience.
Engineer III
The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.
Senior Engineer
The Senior Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work, and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.
The person in this position will work as part of project teams to develop protection and control relay design drawing packages and material lists for high voltage substation projects at voltages including 4.16 kV, 12.5 kV, 24 kV, 44 kV, 100 kV, 230 kV, and 525 kV. These projects range from standalone relay replacements to total substation upgrades. This person will be expected to manage multiple ongoing projects. This person will be expected to interface with other engineering disciplines, project management, and construction/maintenance crews as dictated by the work and excel in adhering to project schedule demands and finding solutions to problems collaboratively.
Responsibilities
Develop protection and control design drawing packages in support of high voltage substation projects – AC schematics, DC schematics, wiring diagrams.
Develop material lists and cable lists.
Read/interpret conceptual One-line drawings and project scope documents.
Perform DC System Evaluations for substation battery loading.
Perform QA reviews for design deliverables produced by other members of the Design team.
Assist in the ongoing development of Design standards and education of Design team on best practices.
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity
Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities
Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity
Conducts engineering and related studies
Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems
Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities
Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills
Maintains accurate records and files
Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally
Basic / Required Qualifications - Engineer III
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience.
Basic / Required Qualifications - Senior Engineer
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
Desired Qualifications
Registration as a Professional Engineer.
Fundamental experience in the use of CAD drafting software.
Skilled in engineering theories and principles
Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Skilled principles of project management.
Experience in the utility industry.
Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department
