Caterpillar’s Product Support & Logistics Division currently has an opening for a Director of Logistics – Global Packaging .

Job Duties:

Leads and manages packaging and returnable container activities across global facilities and functions using Lean principles to provide safe, compliant, and efficient results.

This is the most senior Packaging leadership position within Caterpillar, leading global enterprise packaging design and services to 45+ facilities across all Caterpillar verticals (Construction Industries, Resource Industries, Energy & Transportation, and the Product Supply and Logistics Division). This role also manages a returnable container network for 75+ Caterpillar facilities and 500+ Caterpillar suppliers in North America, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

The Director of Logistics – Global Packaging is accountable to:

  • Lead and inspire highly effective teams to improve results, ensure compliance, and safely deliver business objectives using Lean principles.

  • Provide leadership, coaching, and recognition to a diverse global team, creating a values-based high-performing culture. Attract and recruit top talent.

  • Engage business partners upstream and downstream to develop trust-based relationships, resolve critical issues, create customer-serving solutions, deliver transparent and data-driven communications, and improve end-to-end supply chain visibility, efficiency, cost, availability, and sustainability.

  • Understand the relationship between business drivers and packaging for flows from suppliers to factories and for prime product leaving factories for domestic or export shipment.

  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives for supply and demand requirements / opportunities which deliver competitive cost and competitive performance, even in highly disrupted environments.

  • Incorporate market insights and market feedback into agile packaging solutions.

  • Deploy technology-enabled solutions to transform and elevate packaging processes, incorporating packaging requirements and specifications into new product and new source introductions globally.

  • Identify improvements to packaging and returnable container solutions to improve safety, quality, velocity, sustainability, and cost.

  • Deliver day-to-day results (safety, quality, velocity, sustainability, and cost) for the returnable container network, taking a data-driven approach to monitor and manage daily network performance. Provide accurate and timely reporting on performance measures, with root cause corrective action analysis for metrics below target.

  • Ensure fiscal responsibility and forecast accuracy for Global Packaging period costs, variable costs, and capital expenses.

  • Results Orientation: Knowledge of the importance of meeting or exceeding established targets; Ability to drive critical activities to completion.

  • Supply Chain Management - MFG: Knowledge of functions, principles and techniques used in supply chain management; Ability to develop and use, strategies, practices and tools for controlling the logistical processes.

  • Logistics Management: Knowledge of logistics; ability to develop criteria and standards for measuring, improving, and optimizing logistics processes and flows for effective, efficient, and safe movement of materials and finished products.

  • Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Policy Compliance: Formulates plans to assess potential environmental impact of alternative solutions; minimizes waste of materials, energy, and water within the organization.

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least 15 years of progressive experience in Packaging, Engineering, Procurement, Transportation, Logistics Operations, and / or Supply Chain Management.

  • Previous experience managing a global staff, leading teams to deliver complex goals and projects and / or experience growing and executing logistics capabilities and / or leading and inspiring teams across multiple regions.

  • Previous experience managing within a matrix organization.

  • Able to travel up to 25% (both domestic and international), with more frequent travel during the first 12 months of this assignment.

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Supply Chain, Logistics, or Transportation Management

  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in Supply Chain, a Supply Chain related field, or Business Administration

  • Previous experience with projects that involved packaging as part of the optimization of a network or logistics flow

  • Customer relationship management focus, training, or experience

  • Lean, 6 Sigma, or other Continuous Improvement experience

  • APICS or SCPro certification

Location: Morton, Illinois or Chicago, Illinois. Domestic relocation is offered for the role.
