As a Senior Design Engineer at Caterpillar Inc., you will be responsible for designing and validating heavy structures specifically tailored for mini-hydraulic excavators. Your role will extend beyond design to encompass product and process development in collaboration with both internal teams and global suppliers. Additionally, you will provide valuable engineering insights and support for current production manufacturing processes across worldwide plants as required. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative solutions while ensuring the highest standards of quality and efficiency across Caterpillar’s global operations.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop designs and define validation requirements/activities for heavy structures of mini-hydraulic excavators, ensuring robust and efficient designs that meet Caterpillar’s standards and customer requirements.

  • Collaborate closely with worldwide internal teams and external suppliers to drive product and process development, fostering innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Provide expert engineering input and support to optimize current production manufacturing processes at Caterpillar’s global plants, addressing challenges and implementing effective solutions.

  • Contribute to cross-functional teams, leveraging technical expertise to drive projects to completion while adhering to project timelines and quality standards.

What You Have (Basic Qualifications):

  • Degree requirement: Bachelor’s degree in engineering.

  • Computer-Aided Design & Engineering: Progressive and extensive experience designing complex fabricated components, for example major structures, cab structures, light fabrications, or other complex bracketry . Demonstrated CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) & PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) capability.

  • Effective Communication: Must be able to communicate technical information effectively with team members and others in the workgroup, as well as employees in other units, customers, and suppliers. Willing and able to collaborate with international teams in various time zones.

  • Product Design – Manufacturing : Must have solid knowledge and experience in product design, including validation (simulation and testing), manufacturing (including supply collaboration), and customer support.

Top Candidates Will Have :

  • Knowledge & understanding of the following:

  • Heavy structures fabrication, including welding & metallurgy.

  • Must handle complex issues and resolve fabrication-related facility & customer concerns.

  • Virtual e.g., FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and in-iron validation techniques (e.g., endurance, On Machine Stress Analysis).

  • Large scale product design from inception through to production.

Additional Info :

  • The ideal work location is Clayton, NC. Athens, GA may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Domestic relocation will be provided to candidates that qualify.

  • 10% domestic and international travel is expected.

  • ISE assignments are not available for this position.
