Position Summary

“Depending upon the qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.”

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance and Health Monitoring

  • Maintain certifications and monitor the health of solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS) equipment, providing subject matter expertise in problem identification, analysis, and resolution.

  • Engage with industry peers and utilities to ensure Duke's program implements best practices in inverter-based resources (IBR) and BESS.

  • Review and disseminate daily/weekly IBR and BESS database reports to relevant teams to convey the health status of the Renewables fleet.

  • Act as the primary point of contact (SPOC) between Duke Energy and OEMs for IBRs and BESS, interfacing for engineering support on non-warranty issues.

  • Procure and maintain access to OEM software licenses and maintenance manuals, ensuring up-to-date operational communications, technical bulletins, and data retrieval.

Advanced Troubleshooting and Investigation

  • Perform root cause investigations and data analysis in response to requests from RRE Renewables and internal customers, addressing complex operational challenges.

  • Utilize secure applications and data analytics software to troubleshoot and repair IBR and BESS equipment beyond standard field technician capabilities.

  • Coordinate equipment recovery efforts related to advanced malfunctions or failures, and work closely with the Warranty Manager for warranty claims when necessary.

  • Provide oversight for remediation efforts and contribute to the new site development and commissioning process, ensuring all projects support successful turnover.

Technical Expertise Development

  • Develop and maintain expertise in IBR and BESS technologies to effectively analyze and resolve advanced component and software issues.

  • Continuously improve technical knowledge and skills, representing the company positively and professionally.

  • Establish RRE standards related to IBRs and foster positive working relationships both internally and externally while coaching and mentoring other Renewables Specialists.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Senior Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Professional Engineer

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in engineering theories and principles.

  • Skilled in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, and making informed recommendations, including preparing and presenting findings effectively.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Solid understanding of project management principles.

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) certification.

  • Relevant experience in the utility industry

Working Conditions

  • Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

  • Working outdoors at solar sites, some in rural areas

  • Working in an office environment

  • Travel with company provided vehicle

  • Some physical activities such as kneeling, reaching and lifting 40 pounds or less
