As a Senior Engineer - Performance/Simulation/Application you will serve as an experienced individual contributor on projects and assignments that are complex in nature and that support and enhance Caterpillar product performance, durability, reliability, quality, and serviceability. This position focuses on working with multiple products, design, simulation, research, and validation groups across Caterpillar. Although this position may be the transition from individual contributor to team leadership, the major focus of the job is on technical delivery.
In this role, you will work primarily on projects involving identification, analysis, and resolution of potential structural issues encountered during the development and certification of Roll-Over-Protective-Structures (ROPS). Typical job duties involve performing pre-test analysis predictions, lab test planning, post-test analysis correlation, and helping with design improvement iterations of ROPS systems for mining, construction, and earthmoving products. Other areas of responsibility include, but not limited to, performing nonlinear bolted joint analysis, impact analysis, and fatigue evaluation of machine structures and linkages. You are expected to collaborate with multiple engineering groups within Caterpillar to define analysis needs and develop feasible solutions for new product development, current product improvement, and cost reduction programs.
Success factors for the incumbents include demonstrating excellent analytical skills and a mastery of engineering concepts. Major challenges facing incumbents are meeting goals for cost, reliability, and performance, and managing multiple priorities. This position must keep up to date on changing customer needs as the project progresses, stay current with new technology, and provide guidance and direction on the project to less experienced engineers, technologists, and technicians. Incumbents may be expected to bear significant responsibility for completion of a project with major focus on delivery.
Learning will focus on methods, processes and systems applied to engineering functions, key engineering and communication skills, practical application of theory, and building a comprehensive knowledge of Caterpillar’s products and its applications, customers, suppliers, and competitors.
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Civil engineering plus 9 to 12 years of experience in the application of finite element analysis methods OR a Master of Science degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Civil engineering, plus 6 to 8 years of experience in the application of finite element analysis methods.
With either education or work experience combination, must have a minimum of 5 years of experience with developing ROPS system based on ISO 3471, performing nonlinear material, large deformation, contact, impact, and nonlinear bolted joint analysis processes using Abaqus Implicit and/or Explicit solvers. In addition, 6-8 years of experience is required in the use of Creo, NX/SC3D, Ansys, Hypermesh or other popular commercially available CAD/CAE tools.
