Refinery Operator – Des Moines, IA

This is a full-time, hourly position.

Location : Refinery 1940 Hull Ave. Des Moines IA, 50313

Shifts : Rotating shifts 4 on/ 4 off, 12 hour shifts

Rate of Pay: $29.62 ($27.62 plus $2.00 shift rotation premium)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Operator monitors the system controls reflecting the status of refined soybean oil production and making adjustments as necessary to insure the quality of oil produced.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for adjustments through Process Control:

  • Temperatures

  • Flows

  • Pressures

  • Addition Rates

  • Starting and stopping equipment and more.

  • Gather materials and set-up straightforward equipment.

  • Maintain quality of products produced according to department standards and visual or dimensional specifications.

  • Commitment to ADM’s goal of achieving a zero injury safety culture; understand and follow company safety procedures

  • Comply with company safety policies including safe operation of equipment, PPE usage, hand tool safety, lock-out-tag-out, and proper storage of tools, etc. Comply with good housekeeping policies.

  • Meet productivity standards.

  • Monitor and check various process parameters to achieve desired process specifications, by observing data on system controls, log sheets and lab analysis.

  • Monitor all equipment and system control to insure proper equipment function and proper readouts, and notifies the shift supervisor of the need for repairs.

  • Contribute to department production logs and reports; reflecting production levels, maintenance requirements and related information to supervisor and completes safety and environmental requirements as dictated by job duties.

  • Performs periodic preventative maintenance duties on equipment and may also perform minor repairs on the equipment as necessary.

  • Maintain equipment according to work instructions or preventive maintenance tasks; some trouble-shooting of equipment.

  • Participate in team meetings, which includes planning daily work and resource utilization, problem solving, project work, etc.

  • May be required to cross-train on other equipment or other areas as needed

  • Work with manager to suggest and initiate changes to process, machines, or procedures that improve safety, quality, delivery, or productivity.

  • Must pass an Operator 1 competency exam within 120 day probationary period.

Other Essential Functions:

  • Interface with other departments as needed

  • Other duties throughout the facility as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Background and Skill Requirements

  • HS diploma/GED or equivalent required.

  • 1 to 2 years production experience preferred.

  • Must exhibit regular and prompt attendance.

  • Ability to meet physical requirements such as prolonged standing, climbing stairs and ladders, working in a variety of conditions (heat, cold, dust), and ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted.

  • Ideal candidates will demonstrate initiative to work independently while being flexible to work as a team when needed.

  • Prior experience a must with this type of continuous process

Skills:

  • Possess manual dexterity and good coordination

  • Possess basic reading, writing, and math skills

  • Possess proven mechanical ability or aptitude

  • Possess ability to resolve minor problems, recognize normal and unusual situations

  • Some areas will require the ability to work with manual and/or power equipment.

  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge:

  • Possess working knowledge of manufacturing processes helpful

The Des Moines facility requires continuous standing for duration of the shift.

The employee must frequently lift, carry, push or pull up to 20 pounds and/or occasionally lift, carry, push or pull up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.

  • Employees will be required to wear the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which may include: eye, hearing and respiratory protection, protective smock, steel toe shoes, gloves, hard hats, or face shields. Contact lenses are not allowed on site.
