Job Description

Join our team as a Health Safety Specialist and make a meaningful impact on Environmental Safety and Compliance at Grace! We are hiring a Health Safety Specialist for our East Chicago, IN location, reporting directly to the Environmental Health Safety and Security (EHS&S) Manager. In this pivotal role, you will serve as the primary coordinator for our health and safety compliance programs and play a key part in fostering a culture of engagement and excellence in EHS&S at our site.

Our East Chicago facility at 5215 Kennedy Avenue specializes in manufacturing sodium silicate solution and LUDOX® colloidal silica, which are used in various applications from metal casting to semiconductor polishing. We employ around 50 dedicated individuals and are committed to sustainable practices that benefit our community. Responsibilities

  • Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with OSHA federal, state, and local safety regulations, as well as company safety procedures.

  • Safety Auditing: Lead Critical Life Safety (CLS) audit program and implement management safety walkthrough program. Audit health and safety records to ensure compliance with OSHA federal, state, and local safety regulations, as well as company safety procedures.

  • Safety Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of facilities, equipment, work processes, and active jobs to identify unsafe conditions and practices (50% of the time). Work with relevant stakeholders to implement safeguards and solutions to mitigate risks and enhance workplace safety.

  • Safety Communication: Provide daily safety contacts and communicate safety updates at shift kickoff meetings.

  • Emergency Response: Serve as the lead for emergency response related activities.

  • Safety Documentation: Maintain accurate records of EHS compliance documentation.

  • Industrial Hygiene Testing: Schedule and coordinate Industrial Hygiene Testing (air and noise sampling)

  • Safety Training: Develop robust, hands on, onsite training for a few CLS items, assist with transferring training into computer-based software.

  • Safety Orientation: Conduct new Employee Safety Orientation and new Contractor Safety Training

  • Incident Management: Assist in reporting, managing, safety events, and hazard concerns.

  • Safety Committee: Organize and facilitate engaged employee safety committees, meetings and documentation.

Physical Requirements and Environment

  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials

  • Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.

  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED with 7+ years of experience in chemical manufacturing OR

  • Associate’s degree with 5+ years of EHS experience in a manufacturing environment OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in EHS, Safety, or a related field with 3+ years of professional experience in an EHS-related role in manufacturing.

  • Strong verbal communication and leadership skills.

  • Knowledge of basic business software programs, such as Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Environmental experience in a manufacturing setting.

  • Experience with behavioral based safety cultural improvements.

  • Emergency response knowledge and experience.

  • Experience collaborating and designing EHS virtual and in-person trainings with learning and development teams.
