Job Summary:

The position will report to Advanced Materials Technology, an Innovation & Technology Development Division. This Technical Fellow position serves as the Enterprise technical expert for heat treat and related processes. The person in this role acts as the technical leader for heat treatment developments, critical capital equipment issues, and specifications and manufacturing practices surrounding heat treatment. The person also serves as a consultant and guide on internal plant heat treat engineering and supplier heat treat quality.

What You Will Do:

  • Teach, coach, and mentor from one-on-one to large classroom settings.

  • Maintain awareness of world-wide research activity in heat treat technology through participation in technical societies and leverage that knowledge in related Caterpillar research programs.

  • Advise and mentor to the engineering and manufacturing technical fraternity.

  • Be the knowledge owner, maintain and, and update Caterpillar's confidential heat treat specification, and the related standards and manufacturing practices.

  • Champion the Heat treat engineering Technical Community.

  • Guide and direct the research activity in design, analysis, and manufacturing technologies related to heat treatment.

  • Coach and facilitate the development of the work group to develop collaborative relationships among themselves, with customers, suppliers, other cross functional groups, and internal customers to ensure goals are achieved.

  • Build and maintain relationships with key external partners, suppliers, and universities.

  • Resolve or coordinate the resolution of complex metallurgical issues.

  • Create and maintain an organizational climate/culture which encourages collaboration, excitement, commitment, and a sense of urgency toward business success.

Education Requirement:

The position requires a BS in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering as a minimum

Technology Advising:

• Collaborates with an extended professional technology network to help clients effectively identify, plan for and accomplish technology objectives.

• Supervises others in advising a range of clients across a myriad of products, technologies, services and solutions in the heat treat domain.

• Identifies and evaluates emerging technologies and advises clients regarding their potential business impacts.

• Effectively consults with and conveys technology concepts, business impacts and other advice to senior client levels.

• Trains others in developing technology business, channel management and client coaching.

• Leverages formal certifications in mastery of multiple areas of technology in demonstrating credibility for client consulting.

Influencing Through Expertise:

• Communicates complex ideas and concepts in a clear and concise manner so that others can understand.

• Exhibits depth and breadth of knowledge, skill, and experience in the relevant field.

• Provides relevant, timely and objective subject matter/process expertise and key insight regarding multiple client business areas and affiliated fields.

• Utilizes appropriate tools and techniques for converting product requirements into a technical design.

• Synthesizes input from customers and marketplace; translates to product development efforts.

• Participates in analyzing local market conditions and recognizes new product opportunities.

• Assists in implementing product development strategy for a specific function.

• Selects appropriate methods to integrate environmental considerations into process or product design.

Troubleshooting Technical Problems:

• Evaluates business impact of failure and the criticality and timing of needed resolution.

• Resolves difficult or high-impact equipment and systems problems.

• Monitors machine performance and history; addresses excessive maintenance or repair needs.

• Coaches others how to resolve integration or communications problems in multi-vendor environment.

• Applies specific techniques for isolating a problem and defining resolution approach.

• Uses advanced diagnostic techniques and tools for unusual or performance-related problems.

Additional Information

The locations for this position are the Mossville, or Peoria, IL areas.

Domestic relocation assistance is available for this position.

This position may require up to 10% travel.
