Washington High School

The 12-month Caterpillar Student Trainee Program is designed to provide high school students with an opportunity to build their work skills in preparation for a long-term manufacturing and welding career at Caterpillar. Selected students will participate in a multi-phase program that includes both technical and nontechnical skills needed for full-time employment in the welding & manufacturing trades field upon high school graduation.

As a welder at Caterpillar Inc., you will weld together fabricated piece parts by using a semi-automatic MIG welder with the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process. You will use a weld gauge to measure welds and use air arc and grinder to remove/repair welds.

Through classroom and hands-on learning, participants will become proficient in various welding & manufacturing techniques while receiving high school credit and earning a paid $15.00 hourly wage from Caterpillar as follows:

Phase I: Summer internship weld lab training (32 hours maximum)

Phase II: Fall Semester Co-Op - For High School course credit (15 minimum - 20 hours max)

Phase III: Spring Semester Co-Op - For High School course credit (15 minimum - 20 hours max)

Job Duties

  • Following training in safety and manufacturing processes, student trainees will work closely with weld technicians in our welding program

  • Blueprint and parts specifications reading.

  • Sets up, operates and adjust manual and/or automatic machines to perform fabrication operations and robotic and MIG weld machines to 1E0099 specifications.

  • Perform quality performance checks utilizing weld and attribute gages and other measuring tools.

  • Perform in station repair on defective welds using grinders on flat horizontal surfaces.

  • Follow documented safety work procedures and standard work and routings to perform safe and defect free operations to create and machine weld components.

  • Use lifting devices to move heavy components of weights of more than 25 lbs. (+18 years old restriction)

  • Required Personal Protective Equipment: hearing protection, safety glasses, steel toed/metatarsal foot gear, and protective clothing and equipment including shock resistant gloves, fall restraint harnesses, jackets, chaps, helmet, grinding shield, cut/heat resistant sleeves, etc.

  • Basic computer skills to access Cat Intranet and SAP program

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be a current high school Junior attending Washington High School. (rising Senior in Fall 2025)

  • Must provide letter of recommendation from school official.

  • Students must have minimum 2.8 GPA. (documentation required)

  • Must be at least 16 years of age with parental consent.

  • Must be enrolled in high school manufacturing or weld career vocational course.

  • Must have welding experience or enrolled in a high school welding course.

  • Must have reliable transportation and adhere to safety and attendance policy guidelines.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Top candidates will also have

  • Technical aptitude for welding

  • Positive and motivated attitude

  • Ability to follow standard work procedures/instructions

  • Ability to follow all safety guidelines including the use of all PPE

  • Ability to follow documented procedures for standard work, to perform work safely and free of defects

  • Blueprint reading

  • Weld together fabricated piece parts by using semi-automatic MIG welders

  • Welding to the correct welding processes (GMAW)

Physical requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Willing and able to sit or stand for prolonged periods

  • Willing and able to perform repetitive welding operations

  • Willing and able to lift up to 25 lbs. (required EHS safety training provided)

Additional Information

  • This position is open to Washington High School (rising Seniors) who are in the welding program.

  • These are part time, temporary positions, with a maximum of 32 hours

  • Compensation Pay rate is $15.00 hr

  • The location for this position (on-site) is Bldg. LL in East Peoria IL

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Summary Pay Range:

$15.00 - $17.50
