The Occupational Health Manager is accountable for functioning at high levels of effectiveness in both the supervisory and technical functions of occupational health/medical services for Mercury’s Fond du Lac campus and Wisconsin sites, while also supporting strategic direction for the enterprise. The position works closely with Mercury safety, human resources, operations, workers compensation and legal functions internally, along with medical and local health community externally. The manager leads their direct reports to provide a strong, customer-focused occupational health service team built on effective, efficient and compliant health and safety protocols and processes.

The position reports to the Director – Safety and Occupational Health.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for occupational health team, implementing occupational health programs to support organizational goals and achieve compliance on an ongoing basis.

  • Promote team engagement by facilitating, delegating and empowering team members to grow and contribute toward providing excellent customer service.

  • Schedules team to ensure appropriate coverage of services for three shift operating model.

  • Ensure occupational health compliance requirements and directives are met, including interface with contract Medical Director, OSHA, Wisconsin Department of Health, county health department and application of industry best practices.

  • Ensure safe work practices and safety/health measures are in place for work methods

  • Provides treatment for injuries, creates incident reports and participates in investigations

  • Administer and coordinate safety and health related recordkeeping and reporting functions

  • Partner with stakeholders to reduce/eliminate work-related injuries with a goal of zero injuries.

  • Identify and develop solutions for emerging trends in the occupational health/medical services arena, using both internal systems/data and external resources.

  • Provides oversight for critical functions such as blood borne pathogens, substance abuse testing, mental health, viral control, medical aspects of return to work, case management, etc.

  • Interface with local medical providers concerning occupational health protocols, medical screening, return to work and case management.

  • Ensure active case management for all workers compensation claims, conduct follow-up with providers, third party, management and employees as needed.

  • Ensure medical supplies and equipment inventory support safe and efficient operations.

  • Oversee plant emergency medical first responder teams, assuring appropriate training and development of emergency response plans.

  • Ensure appropriate charting, documentation, confidentiality and records retention.

  • Conduct occupational health services analysis, occupational injury/illness review and non-occupational services management, including oversight of medical aspects of return to work.

  • Identify emerging trends, critical process and system needs in support of action plans, measures and metrics for annual planning and budgeting processes.

  • Conduct employee performance reviews, coaching and direction to ensure ongoing success of individuals and the team.

  • Interface in a proactive, effective manner with Mercury EHS and HR staff.

  • Assist director and human resources team with long range strategy and planning.

  • Other activities as directed by the Director – Safety and Occupational Health.

Job Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in occupational health, including experience in medical surveillance, workers compensation, disability management, and return-to-work programs.

  • 5 years experience in supervisory/ team leadership role, ability to motivate and inspire others.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or health related field. Current license in applicable state of work as a Registered Nurse preferred.

  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN), Certified Case Manager (CCM), Certified Registered Rehabilitation Nurse (CRRN) or equivalent certification preferred.

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred

  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships through partnership and collaboration.

  • High degree of flexibility, able to plan, prioritize and adjust methods as needed.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills – able to communicate complex issues clearly.

  • Knowledge of LSS principles and methodologies to optimize work processes.
