Job Description

BAE Systems in Fort Walton Beach is in search of a Technical Writer to join our Sensor and Electronics Solutions Team.


To develop, write and edit material for reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction manuals, catalogs and other technical publications concerned with engineering or related technical disciplines.

II. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Duties and responsibilities which occupy a major portion of time and importance in the job. Incumbent(s) perform one or more of the following duties.)

  1. Reviews journals, reports and similar material to become familiar with product or process terminology. Reviews manufacturers' and trade catalogs, drawings and other data relative to operation, maintenance, testing and service of equipment. Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, parts lists, specifications, mockups and product samples to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence and details.

  2. Determines installation and operating procedures and details. Conducts site survey to observe production, developmental and experimental activities. Interfaces with engineers and technicians to become familiar with installation and operation methods presently utilized. Observes material processing to determine material and material processing specifications or specifications for manufacturing and operation of equipment.

  3. Organizes material and performs writing assignments according to specifications regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style and terminology. Writes technical descriptions using knowledge of material standards, industrial processes and operating procedures. Reviews published materials and recommends revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods of reproduction and binding. Selects photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams or charts to illustrate materials or sequences.

  4. Analyzes developments in specific field to determine need for revisions, corrections and changes in previously published materials and development of new materials.

  5. Edits material for structure, completeness, accuracy, organization consistency, and appropriateness of content. Recommends changes in scope, format and content, restructuring and rewriting as required.

  6. Confers with customer representatives to establish technical specifications, determine specific or general subject material to be developed and resolve problems concerned with publishing.

  7. Arranges and coordinates graphics, typing, duplication and distribution of prepared material.

  8. Reviews work of other writers and graphics and production personnel to ensure technical accuracy, clarity and quality as required. May coordinate activities of other personnel engaged in the review and monitoring of technical and engineering documentation and material.

  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills


Bachelor s Degree and 2 years related experience

Associates Degree and 4 years related experience

High School Diploma or GED and 6 years related experience

  1. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

  2. Experience working with teams responsible for writing technical publications utilizing authoring tools for both structured and unstructured documents such as PTC Arbortext Editor and Adobe FrameMaker.

  3. Experience in the use of Microsoft office products such as Word, Excel and Access with an emphasis on the functionality of Styles within MS Word.

  4. Experience in development/authoring technical publication data in accordance with technical specifications from source data.

  5. Must maintain regular work schedule in normal office environment and work from home environment. May work extended hours or weekends.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

Experience working within a Common Source Database environment and publishing to page-based documentation output as well as IETM/IETP is highly preferred.

Experience in development of data modules and DTD/Schema is high preferred.

Experience in developing and editing S1000D stylesheets is high preferred.
