Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. is recruiting for a Sr. Scientist, Self Care R&D located in Fort Washington, PA.

The primary responsibilities of this role will include the continued product development and expansion of the North America Self Care pipeline, including R&D leadership for multiple complex technical development programs at various stages (early feasibility, late stage, etc.).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and expand subject matter expertise in developing solid oral dosage formulations.

  • Advance novel science and development of products that are translational to applicable need state offering consumer value such as superior efficacy, safety, and/or consumer experience.

  • Apply diversified expertise in technical principles and implications of product/technology outcomes on the larger function/organization. Influences strategic direction of projects, initiatives, and/or scientific subject areas in support of organization’s strategies.

  • Technically mentor and develop multiple scientists including in person trainings on formulation techniques.

  • Technical program management and execution for both internal and external developmental programs.

  • Lead among cross-functional R&D partners to ensure external engagement across various scientific need state landscapes. Collaborate closely with commercial partners (Marketing and Consumer Insights) to understand consumer & Health Care Professional (HCP) unmet needs for continued pipeline development including concept creation.

  • Combine consumer insights with scientific precision and creativity to shape innovative solutions to unmet consumer needs.

  • Maintain and/or create standards, guidelines, and procedures for diverse R&D activities. Use expertise to improve operational efficiencies and meet compliance requirements.

  • Employ standard GDP in documentation of development activities to meet internal and external requirements. Generate protocols, reports, and specifications.

  • Apply statistical tools to design experiments. Compile and analyze data. Identify causes, trends, and correlations. Draws conclusions and propose solutions.

  • Maintain compliance, consistency of practices and work quality.



  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or other related field with 5+ years of industry experience OR a Master's degree with 3+ years of industry experience OR a PhD with 0-3 years of industry experience.


  • Ability to work majority on-site at the Johnson & Johnson site in Fort Washington, PA and to perform hands on formulation of pharmaceutical dosage forms.

  • Basic knowledge of GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practice), GLPs (Good Laboratory Practice), ICH (International Conference on Harmonization), CFRs (Code of Federal Regulations), and regulatory requirements.

  • Passion for laboratory experimentation and a desire to develop technical subject matter expertise.

  • Ability to work independently as well as on a team.

  • Strong aptitude for quality and compliance.


  • Technical knowledge in the physical sciences, engineering, and/or analytical chemistry.

  • Knowledge of multiple pharmaceutical dosage forms and pharmaceutical business.

  • Experience within product development, process development, process validation or technology transfer.

  • Knowledge of new/current technologies.

  • Operating knowledge of process equipment and instrumentation as required for job function.

  • Ability to plan, schedule, conduct and coordinate research projects.

  • Ability to author effective research protocols, reports, batch records, memos, and e-mails.


  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point, etc.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to make effective presentations at team/company meetings.

  • Travel, domestically or internationally, maybe required and up to 10% of their time.

    Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Consumer Health business to create a new publicly traded company. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 24 months, and it will be subject to legal requirements including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as required, and other customary conditions and approvals.
