Electric Power Division (EPD) has an opening for a Design Engineer in the Rental Engineering group located in Griffin, GA. In this role you will lead a team of engineers to support 16 kW – 2 MW mobile gensets across multiple facilities. Experience the full spectrum of the product life cycle from new product design to maintenance and obsolescence with a team packing more than 100 years of genset design experience. You will incorporate field feedback into the scope of new product design but be responsible for the design improvements in production and manage changes in bill of material and/or supply base. Responsibilities include addressing production support, answering customer inquiries, responding to dealer needs, interacting with suppliers, and managing print updates.

What you will do:

  • Provide engineering support of generator sets 500 kW – 2000 kW manufactured in Griffin, GA.

  • Design of new products, processes, components, and systems to meet customer requirements within the capabilities of internal process partners.

  • Work with regulatory and validation experts to design components and systems to meet certification requirements such as CE, CSA, and UL.

  • Engage manufacturing and suppliers to optimize designs for cost, quality, and assembly

  • Provide technical guidance regarding test and analysis

  • Communicate results to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units

  • Complete projects on time and on cost

  • Raise customers’ and management’s awareness of trade-offs between time, resources and quality.

  • Support generator sets throughout the product life cycle.

  • Improve sustainability through tighter emission controls, improved efficiency, and extending maintenance cycles.

What you have:

Degree Requirement: Bachelor’s or Masters degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

Technical Excellence: Knowledge of Generator set design, including awareness of applicable codes; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges in this area.

Level Working Knowledge:

• Experience troubleshooting complex problems

• Engages appropriate subject matter resources to effectively resolve technical issues.

• Defines, analyzes, and provides superior technical solutions to business problems.

• Has awareness of CE, UL, CSA, NFPA, and NEC requirements

• Performs product design, bill of material definition, product integration, and 3D model development across multiple product lines

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

Level Working Knowledge:

• Approaches a complex problem by breaking it down into its component parts.

• Organizes and prioritizes the sequence of steps to be taken to remedy the situation.

• Identifies many possible causes for a problem based on prior experience and current research.

• Quantifies the costs, benefits, risks and chances for success before recommending a course of action.

• Develops test plans to validate changes and analyzes results for effectiveness

Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.

Level Working Knowledge:

• Develops an understanding of customer requirements and translates those into technical deliverables

• Creates and introduces new techniques that expedite or simplify the development process.

• Develops proof-of-concept exercises to prove or disprove validity of proposed products or designs.

• Collaborates on the appropriate solutions to complex product design and development problems.

• Designs working prototypes of a variety of proposed products or services.

• Delivers on agreed to timelines while tracking progress to completion.

Summary Pay Range:

$95,640.00 - $143,520.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
