What Nuclear Pharmacy contributes to Cardinal Health

Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective coordination of Cardinal Health's pharmacy operations that service acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care and alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices as well as retail customers.

Nuclear Pharmacy is responsible for providing radiopharmaceuticals and other drugs to medical care providers under highly regulated State and Federal guidelines; may also consult with or advise physicians and nuclear medicine technologists on the safe and efficacious use of radioactive drugs for diagnosis and therapy.

Shift/Schedule

  • 40 hours per week

  • Various schedule with a mix of days, nights, weekend, holiday and on call work. Rotating call and holidays may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as Radiation Safety Officer of facility by overseeing radiation safety program and ensuring radiation safety compliance.

  • Provides radiation safety training to facility staff members.

  • Performs radiation safety tasks including well checks & efficiencies, air monitoring, fume hood flow checks, room wipes & surveys, waste management, vehicle surveys, and meter checks.

  • Provides radiation safety training to facility staff members.

  • Oversees work and training of employees in the non-dispensing tasks of handling radioactivity.

  • Handles coaching and counseling of employees as it relates to radiation safety.

  • Regularly reviews license commitments and ensures compliance.

  • Completes required monthly audit; assigns tasks to and supervises others in the location.

  • Coordinates the radioactive waste decay and disposal process. Maintains disposal records.

  • Tests, calibrates, and repairs measuring and indicating instruments for conformance to established regulatory agency requirements and corporate standards; arranges for repair by manufacturer, as appropriate.

  • Provides pharmaceutical care to patients as a staff pharmacist, including compounding of nuclear medications, testing for quality through chromatography, and directing distribution of medication using a team of drivers.

  • Assesses and maintains pharmacy inventory and executes necessary orders, including reviews, to maintain optimal supply and ongoing availability of drugs, identifying and procuring alternative drugs to mitigate risks, when necessary.

  • Runs the PIC program and conducts audits in alignment with state and local laws, taking into consideration any changes that may affect pharmacy operations.

  • Acts as a leader in the management of the pharmacy and coordinates with regional pharmacies to share best practices, educate pharmacists, relay material changes to pharmacy operational policies.

  • Engages in processes for hiring of pharmacy staff, onboarding, and performance management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and/or PharmD required

  • Valid Pharmacist’s license in the state in which the pharmacy operates, or is in the process of obtaining a valid license preferred

  • 8-12 years of related experience, preferred

  • Authorized User and capable of becoming the Radiation Safety Officer of the pharmacy

  • Working knowledge of biohazardous waste management procedures

  • Ability to hear, write, and speak clearly in order to communicate with customers and health care professionals

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Manual dexterity required for occasional reach, lifting and holding of small objects

  • Demonstrated manual dexterity in order to dispense doses

  • Ability to lift containers weighing up to 75 pounds

  • Must hold a valid driver's license in the state in which the pharmacy is located or obtain one upon hire

  • Comfortable driving in all types of weather conditions (rain, sleet, snow, fog, wind and sun)

Job Summary

Through effective leadership and coordination with a team of direct reports, the primary purpose of the Senior Pharmacist IV, Nuclear is to manage, facilitate, and oversee execution of the Radiation Safety Program and day-to-day operations of the nuclear pharmacy, including management of the RS (Radiation Safety) program. The Senior Pharmacist IV, Nuclear may participate in clinical trials and has completed all necessary training and is licensed to be a practicing nuclear pharmacist in their state of occupation. As such, this job has responsibility for optimizing pharmacy operations and procedures to ensure consistent and efficient delivery to control costs, minimize waste, maximize customer satisfaction and deliver positive patient outcomes while maintaining compliance with Federal and state regulatory agencies. In addition, this job has responsibility for managing inventory, processing orders, compounding patient-specific doses of drugs and directing a team of drivers to deliver medications after they have been tested for quality. As a pharmacy leader, this job has extended responsibility for coordinating with regional pharmacies to ensure alignment with strategic objectives.

Anticipated salary range: $118,000 - $177,030
