United States Steel Utility Technician (New Hire) in Indiana

The Utility Technician job is an entry level position and a core component for our workforce as one the of world’s largest steel producers. The Utility Technician operates equipment and performs tasks that support the various production and service units. As a Utility Technician you will perform general labor duties that include the use of torches, shovels, and other hand tools. You will also operate some mobile equipment, in a heavy industrial environment. The Utility Technician also supports and assists in maintenance of plant equipment.
Job Responsibilities:
Control Room Operator serves as both a Control Room Operator and Outside Operator if needed
Assist with the start-up, operation, and shutdown of all equipment, including turbine/generators, boilers, pumps, fans, and other plant systems
Ensure that all equipment, including the combustion turbine, Once Through Steam Generator, steam turbine, generators, and all plant auxiliaries are operating safely and efficiently
Ensure that the daily logbook documentation and other plant recordkeeping requirements are completed and filled out in a timely, accurate manner, including electrical output, steam output, emissions output, fuel consumed, water consumed
Conduct periodic log and record review to ensure that lockout/tag out procedures, equipment status and designated administrative systems are functioning effectively
Participate in the administrative maintenance of plant operating manuals, technical references, prints and diagrams and preventive/predictive maintenance records
Be proficient in the operation of all plant equipment, and proactively monitor all plant equipment and systems
Work in various areas of the mill is required. Dependent upon the area, environmental conditions can be hot, cold, dirty, greasy, wet, and noisy
Requirements:
High School Diploma or GED
The position requires rotating 8-hour shift work, which will include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
The position requires overtime work as needed
Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines always. Safety is our core value which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, boots with metatarsal protection, and when necessary, respirator equipment
The position requires punctuality, consistent attendance, and self-direction for the success of the operations
Must pass pre-employment assessment
Preferred Skills:
Experience operating high pressure natural boiler
GE Frame 6B combustion turbine
GE back pressure extraction steam turbine (19MW)
Experience operating high purity water demineralizer systems (2 trains, cation, anion, cation polisher)
Experience operating softened water system (4 softeners, cation)
Multi-media filter system, (4 filters)
General knowledge of Ovation DCS
General knowledge of Mark V turbine control system
Theoretical understanding of 138kV transmission systems, and electrical switch-gear systems
