Job summary

This position works within cross-functional project teams including R&D, Quality Assurance, Supplier Quality, Planning, Purchasing, Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Suppliers to design, develop, optimize, and test packaging solutions to support existing and new products.

This position works as a recognized packaging technical expert who can provide engineering knowledge and oversight particularly in the areas of pouches, cartons, hoop assemblies and trays. Designs, specifies, develops, and procures new packaging tooling, fixtures and equipment.

Duties & responsibilities

Under limited supervision and in accordance with all applicable international, federal, state and local laws/regulations/requirements and Corporate Johnson & Johnson, procedures and guidelines, this position:

  • Design and develop packaging solutions for neurovascular products considering factors such as product durability, weight, dimensions, and transportation requirements.

  • Conduct packaging feasibility studies and cost analyses to optimize packaging designs for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

  • Collaborate with product development teams to ensure packaging requirements are considered during the product design phase.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards related to packaging materials and transportation.

  • Identify and implement packaging improvements to enhance product protection, sustainability, and logistical efficiency.

  • Evaluate packaging vendors and materials and manage vendor relationships to ensure quality and cost-effective packaging solutions.

  • Develop and maintain packaging documentation including specifications, testing procedures, and design records.

  • Troubleshoot packaging issues during manufacturing, transportation, and distribution, and implement corrective actions as needed.

  • Supports the selection and validation of new packaging materials.

  • Provides financial cost assessments for new products.

  • Provides technical leadership of cross functional teams on many packaging design and process improvements.

  • Responsible for communicating business related issues or opportunities to next management level

  • Responsible for ensuring personal and Company compliance with all International, Federal, State, local and Company regulations, requirements, policies, and procedures

  • Performs other duties assigned to support product Life Cycle Management projects

Qualifications

Experience and education

  • A minimum of Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field required.

  • An advanced degree in preferred.

  • A minimum of 6 years of professional experience is required.

  • A highly regulated industry knowledge is required; Medical device industry experience is preferred.

  • Familiarity with ISO 13485 Design Control, and manufacturing process IQ, OQ, PQ qualifications as related to medical devices is required.

  • Six Sigma Process Excellence knowledge is preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and testing methodologies

  • Knowledge of financial accounting and analysis methods to assess product standard costs, project values, and capital requirements is required.

  • Leadership experience in managing technical relationships with external suppliers and OEMs is required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES and AFFILIATIONS .

  • Proficiency in CAD software for packaging design (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external vendors.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively.

  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and industry standards related to packaging (e.g., ISTA, ASTM).

  • Strong project management skills required (Microsoft Project, FPX and/or other project management tools).

Other:

  • This position will require up to 10% travel.

  • The anticipated base pay range for this position is $90,000 – $144,900

The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation’s performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company’s discretion on an individual basis.

  • Vacation – up to 120 hours per calendar year

  • Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington – up to 56 hours per calendar year

  • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays – up to 13 days per calendar year

  • Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
