Abbott Director, Systems Architect in Irving, Texas

Responsibilities:

Direct medical diagnostic system development programs including hardware, software and/or assay consumable development from concept through product launch and sustainment. Responsible for translation of customer input and commercial vision to system requirements, specifications, and overall system design. Ensures systems are designed to meet functional requirements, scalability, quality and security. Evaluates system design choices based on user needs, cost, and required integration of existing systems.

Apply expertise in hardware design, platform development and commercialization experience to new diagnostic system design. Simplify system complexity, evaluate technologies, recommend design options and tradeoffs, and drive for effective solutions.

Provide system integration guidance by working closely with assay developers, consumable designers, and firmware/software teams, drawing on experience and/or expertise in system architecting and software, optical, mechanical and electrical design.

This position also requires coordination with external (within Abbott and outside of Abbott) functions, suppliers and/or co-development partners, manufacturing, service and support scale-up in multi-site R&D and operations facilities, marketing pre-launch activities, regulatory strategy and clinical validation requirements for IVD product in US and international regions.

Qualifications/ Experience:

Education Requirements

Advanced degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Biomedical Engineering required.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ successful experience in delivery of complex programs, including hardware and instrumentation development, preferably in a medical device, in IVD field, or other regulated environment. Direct experience with point of care instrumentation is a plus.

  • Technical, financial, communication and management skills required to manage diverse R&D teams within and outside of Abbott.

  • Experience in the following: system architecture development, manufacturing scale up of systems and/or reagents as well as commercial service and customer support.

  • Driven to deliver results. When challenges arise, demonstrates perseverance in identifying and implementing solutions to keep the program on track. Consistently seeking to drive efficiency and exceed expectations.

  • Relentless curiosity— proactively anticipating risks; demonstrated ability to uncover hidden (or less obvious) risks, take ownership of problems, resolve ambiguities, exercise sound judgment and independently determine appropriate course of action where precedent may not exist.

  • An approachable and credible communication style, with exceptional verbal and written communication skills; to keep all levels of the organization informed, engaged, and motivated.

  • Intellectual agility - able to pivot based on shifting priorities and balance multiple workstreams seamlessly in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent collaboration skills – able to navigate complex matrix within the Division and the broader Abbott organization to ensure alignment of priorities and partnership throughout program execution.

The base pay for this position is $143,300.00 – $286,700.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
