What You Will Achieve

The Manager/TL, Safety Culture will provide strategic and technical leadership, lead, coach and mentor others and will manage safety related programs, projects and governance. This position plans, coordinates and supports the ongoing development of the site safety culture program, working closely with the Safety Support and Safety Systems manager to ensure effective deployment and active participation throughout the organization.

This role also acts as the Safety Lead to the site's Support Functions; as well as manages the ongoing development and deployment of the site safety management system within these departments. This individual ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local regulations, Corporate and Division procedures and standards.

This role provides subject matter expertise to operational leadership with the development, design, delivery and governance of area specific safety strategies and programs that will ensure the site meets its safety goals and objectives.

Due to the size and complexity of the site, this role will have the opportunity to coach, develop and lead at least one professional to ensure that the sites safety culture program meets the evolving needs of the organization.

How You Will Achieve It

  • Lead the development, deployment and ongoing evolution of the site safety culture, consultation, and communication program.

  • Day to day management, coaching and development of a small subset of the Occupational Safety team.

  • Guides operational leadership to develop appropriate strategy and programs to effectively manage operational safety risk.

  • Coordinate the development and implementation of various management system elements including Hazard identification, risk assessment and control, plant hazard Communication, Machine Guarding, Ergonomics, Powered Industrial Trucks, PPE, Incident Investigation and Safety Training as well as ensuring the maintenance of required documentation.

  • Develops solutions to a wide range of safety problems where complex analysis may be needed.

  • Creates and presents training on safety subjects including orientation and exempt training.

  • Acts as a "consultant", providing advice that ensures the highest level of compliance is achieved.

  • Co-chair safety governance meetings with local area leadership.

  • Provide expertise to assigned operational area Safety Committees.

  • Assess and safely manage planned changes in assigned operational areas.

  • Monitors the completion of actions generated by project safety review, risk assessments and incident investigations to ensure effective and timely management of safety risk.

  • Analyzes and interpret new regulations and recommends options for the Plant. Develops written procedures and guidance documents in subject areas of occupational safety.

  • Provides input to EHS Department budget and capital plan expenditures.

  • Conducts critical investigations resulting in root cause determination and response. Investigations may require the application of new approaches and methods in the field. Presents findings and recommendations to management.

  • Applicant must have a High School Diploma (or Equivalent) and 10 years of relevant experience.

  • OR an Associate's degree with 8 years of experience.

  • OR a Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of experience.

  • OR a Master's degree with more than 3 years of experience.

  • OR a PhD with 0+ years of experience.

  • Experience successfully deploying safety culture improvement programs across a large organization.

  • Experience effectively consulting and communicating at all levels of a large multidisciplinary campus.

  • Field experience in industrial safety with a solid understanding of the areas of Hazard Communication, LOTO, Machine Guarding, Ergonomics, Incident Investigation, and Safety Training along with regulatory coordination and report preparation.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills are required.

  • Proficiency at project management and internal customer management.

  • Success building effective working relationships with departmental leaders such as engineering, manufacturing and quality.

  • Strong understanding of safety regulatory requirements, specifically OSHA/NFPA standards and conducting regulatory compliance audits.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to use mathematics (including basic algebra and statistics).

  • Ability to gather and organize data from multiple sources.


  • Prefer candidates with 10+ years of Safety / EHS experience from applicable industrial environments (ie combustible chemical processing, GMP manufacturing, paper milling or heavy industry).

  • CSP, CIH or other EHS related professional certification.

  • Experience leading a small team of safety professionals.

  • Experience working in the PSM governed industries.

  • Working knowledge of GMP and chemistry.

  • Knowledge of MIOSHA rules and regulations.

  • Experience with Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing.


  • Must be able to perform field observations which could involve walking or standing on uneven terrain, squatting, bending, twisting, turning, and reaching above shoulder height and work in various climates from extreme cold to heat.

  • May require walking, standing, and or sitting for prolonged periods.

  • Must be able to walk and drive between site facilities.


  • Standard work schedule, Monday - Friday, days; may infrequently require off-shift and weekend to support activities in line with the production schedule.
