Job Description

Corporate Strategy, Business Development, Technology, Procurement and Human Resources.

The Ethics and Compliance Officer is responsible for the planning, management and independent oversight of ethics and compliance activities within Corporate Strategy, Business Development, Technology, Procurement and Human Resources. The ethics and compliance activities in these areas are related to internal and external requirements, as well as driving business ownership of ethics and compliance within those organizations.

The Ethics and Compliance Officer demonstrates and is recognized for having both subject matter expertise in the relevant guidance, policies, codes, and regulations, as well as good judgement and a thorough understanding of the relevant business needs, strategic objectives, and operational practices. The Ethics and Compliance Officer applies this expertise in advising and counseling clients, including Senior Management, on ethics and compliance issues and assisting in the assessment and implementation of ethics and compliance activities.

Key activities include, early involvement in business initiatives, projects and activities with the aim to identify potential ethics and compliance risks, providing guidance to address the risks and bringing in Company subject matter experts as needed, support the development of project specific risk mitigation strategies and controls, developing the strategy for the annual ethics and compliance, risk mitigation, and audit activities and ensuring they are executed successfully within designated timeframes. The Ethics and Compliance Officer is also responsible for the implementation, maintenance and training of policies and procedures designed to ensure these areas execute activities in accordance with our company's ethics and compliance requirements with support from the policy owners and subject matter experts as needed.

Primary Activities:

  • Identify areas of potential ethics and compliance risk for Corporate Strategy, Business Development, Technology, Procurement and Human Resources, set strategic direction for ethics and compliance plans and partner with these areas to develop action items that proactively address potential ethics and compliance risk.

  • Provide independent oversight for ethics and compliance across these areas related to internal and external requirements.

  • Advise, provide guidance, and drive ethics and compliance ownership to leaders within these areas.

  • Work collaboratively with these areas as well as the Office of General Counsel and subject matter experts to ensure that annual ethics and compliance and audit activities are executed successfully within designated timeframes.

  • Implement, maintain and provide training on policies and procedures designed to ensure that activities in these areas are executed in accordance with ethics and compliance requirements.

  • Coordinate with the various leadership teams to ensure periodic review and updates, as needed, of all relevant guidance documents.

  • Independently prepare relevant policies, guidance, reports, answers to questions, and other documentation to support these areas.

  • Proactively participate in project teams; critically review all data and documents to ensure ethics and compliance requirements are met.

  • Lead/co-lead projects that have been identified as a high priority by the Ethics and Compliance Organization or the areas.

  • Provide ethics and compliance review and approval for policy exceptions, modifications to template ethics and compliance language in contracts, and other activities executed by personnel of Corporate Strategy, Business Development, Technology, Procurement and Human Resources as appropriate. In collaboration with the Office of General Counsel to provide, to the extent possible, a seamless client experience for the areas.



  • Minimum of 8-10 years relevant experience is required. Pharmaceutical industry experience is required. Global legal and/or compliance experience preferred.

  • BA/BS required; advanced degree in law preferred.

Demonstrated Skills and Requirements:

  • Strong business oriented focus and ability to drive behavioral change through timely and effective ethics and compliance counselling, development of appropriate and balanced risk mitigation strategies and controls and training to support ethics and compliance requirements.

  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of oversight, monitoring, and ethics and compliance requirements for the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Thorough understanding of regulations and ethical guidelines relevant to the pharmaceutical industry to ensure compliance with these external as well as internal guidelines and standard operating procedures.

  • Ability to see complex issues and projects from start to finish with strong personal integrity.

  • Ability to translate and communicate complex concepts clearly and apply knowledge to real world situations.

  • Independently prepare presentations, guidance, reports, answers to questions, and other documentation to support the areas.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.

  • Effectively collaborate with stakeholders within and across functions and divisions within the Company.

  • Experience/comfort working with senior managers and leaders, Office of General Counsel, and external regulatory agencies.

  • Flexibility to work across global time zones as needed.
