Description

We are looking for an Engineering Technician in the Separations and Process Design group in the Scaleup and Process Innovation (S&PI) Division at Eastman Chemical Company located in Kingsport, TN. The position will have responsibility for experimental build, planning, and execution of multiple process/technology demonstrations (separations and reactions) as well as provide key technology input into process unit designs developed at Eastman to support growth and core support technology projects across the company.

Critical need for this role is the ability to build AND operate laboratory units from bench to pilot scale. Key skills that are needed for this role are creativity, ability to learn, application of mechanical and electrical training as it relates to small process unit operation construction and operation.

**This opening is for a day shift position. However, could be asked to work a 12-hour rotating shift position as business needs require. (Shift schedule is rotating days / nights. Non-exempt employees are eligible to receive a shift premium for hours worked between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.)

Responsibilities

  • Strong commitment to process safety and promoting a safe work environment.

  • Develop hands-on technical expertise on multiple separation capabilities such as distillation or extraction.

  • Develop hands-on technical expertise with building, operating, and running laboratory systems.

  • Highly desired: Previous experience/training in mechanical, electrical and/or control systems job/work to be leveraged in unit operation construction and automation.

  • Develop, build and optimize new process demonstration units at multiple lab-based scales (bench up to mini-plant).

  • Working in a fast paced, results-oriented team environment to assist in developing new technologies and processes providing innovative solutions to customer needs

  • Participate effectively on multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Collaborating with process design experts to develop breakthrough innovative solutions on new and existing process separations and design challenges that may include:

  • Synthesis of new materials utilizing small and large scale lab equipment.

  • Development and optimization of laboratory procedures and capabilities.

  • Developing new information and understanding of existing product through lab and bench scale experimentation.

  • Documenting experimental work and writing technical and invention reports.

  • Provide reliable & high-quality data to senior scientists and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

Entry level Engineering Technician qualifications described below are required: ⦁ Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in basic science or technical training program. ⦁ Completion of Manufacturing coursework, examples including: Manufacturing Processes and Specifications, Industrial Concepts, Materials and Manufacturing Processes and Computer Numerically Controlled Machines.

Other Qualifications: ⦁ Experience preferred (but not required) for bench, lab, or pilot scale separations. ⦁ Highly desired: Previous experience/training in mechanical , electrical and/or control systems job/work to be leveraged in unit operation construction and automation. ⦁ Preferred knowledge of Lab Automation software (Camile, LabVIEW, Mettler Toledo software, etc.). ⦁ Problem solving, math and science skills and familiarity with statistical methodology. ⦁ Initiative and the ability to work in a team setting. ⦁ Clear and effective written and oral communication. ⦁ General computer experience with relevant and Microsoft software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
