Job Summary:
This position will supervise personnel responsible for preventing quality problems through the development and maintenance of quality metrology measurement equipment. Day to day management of quality inspection team includes priority setting and problem resolution to support production requirements Primary responsibility is to provide support for quality equipment in facility operations, and metrology. Position will ensure conformity to global quality processes defined in the Caterpillar Quality Management System (QMS), day to day management of quality resources, and ensure resources are trained and competent.
What you will do:
The incumbent is accountable for conformity to global quality processes and reporting to management on QMS process execution. The role is responsible for managing Gage Lab, Air Tool Repair, and Torque Tool processes. The incumbent is responsible for setting priorities, establishing inspection schedules for Air Tool, Torque Tool, and Metrology equipment and process.
The incumbent in this position is responsible for managing the execution of processes, plans and tools that support global quality systems or related processes i.e. ANSI Standards, ASME Standards, Gage Lab, ISO Standards, and MH1012, etc.
The goal of quality assurance is to contribute to the prevention of product defects by eliminating the cause and maintaining quality standards by providing properly inspected material, procedures, and tests. Incumbent and staff are responsible from the planning stage of production where proper tooling, machines and inspection equipment are essential to produce desired quality.
Responsible for managing the execution and adherence of procedures in calibration and metrology principles as applied to multiple measurement disciplines including Dimensional, Gauge blocks, micrometers, calipers, pin gauges, go/no-go gauges, comparators, Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM’s), supermics, laser ruler / interferometer, surface plates, torque wrenches, load cells, height gauges, drop gauges, etc.
The incumbent's team will be instrumental in advancing the principles of calibration and metrology across a wide range of measurement disciplines, thereby guaranteeing precision and excellence in all facets of our operations. Their primary responsibility will involve determining the specific process measures required for each torque-controlled tool, taking into account factors such as tool specifications, operational conditions, and performance standards.
To achieve this, the torque team will implement a comprehensive framework for data collection, which will include gathering calibration data, static data, and dynamic data. They will also identify and document any additional requirements essential for the effective use of all torque tools. This systematic approach will help ensure that all tools meet rigorous performance and accuracy standards.
Furthermore, the incumbent will uphold strict adherence to established procedures in making "fitness for use" determinations, which are critical for maintaining operational safety and effectiveness. They will also actively participate in internal certification meetings at the facility level, contributing their expertise to ensure that all processes align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements. Through these efforts, the team will support continuous improvement initiatives and enhance the overall quality of our measurement operations.
The incumbent is responsible for the training, motivation, and development of employees. This position instructs personnel on how to determine the quality of work with the aids of inspection gauges and blueprints. The incumbent provides counsel and advice to employees concerning personal and assigned work problems, recommends merit increases for qualified employees, disciplines employees by writing cautions and discharging or suspending employees, and writes commendations for outstanding employees. These are the tools used by the incumbent to motivate people. Personal contact is made daily with each employee relating to quality problems, safety, housekeeping, etc.
The position reports directly to the Factory Quality Manager and is responsible for the quality of all material utilized in assembly. The position supervises or manages a work unit of hourly and contract employees where planning, scheduling, training, monitoring, and reviewing work of subordinates is required, and is responsible for all personnel issues and performance evaluation of subordinates. They will engage with Component Groups, Global Quality resources and Facility Management.
Typical internal customers include various contacts in multiple geographic areas, and external contacts include various customers and vendors throughout worldwide markets. The position is challenged to manage a team that is required to quickly and correctly identify problems that may not be obvious. The incumbent’s team solves problems by determining the best course of action, within departmental guidelines, from many existing solutions. The incumbent is expected to determine the best way to complete job assignments to achieve desired results. Work is reviewed after completion, except in the most complex or high impact situations. Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Accuracy, Efficiency, Cost Savings, Process Quality, Part Quality, Internal Quality Certification, Vendor Certification, etc.
Education:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Manufacturing or equivalent experience with an excellent understanding of quality management practices is desired.
Top Candidates will also have:
Prior Supervisory Experience.
Coordinate Metrology Society’s (CMS) quality certification.
Knowledge of shop operations and maintenance procedures is required.
In addition, three to five years of job-related experience are required.
Good human relations skills are required to develop a cooperative work relationship with others inside and outside the department.

Travel requirements may be up to 10%.

Summary Pay Range:
$110,520.00 - $165,840.00
