AbbVie Ventures is AbbVie’s strategic investment arm and is a core component of AbbVie's integrated approach to external innovation. AbbVie Ventures invests in very early stage transformational opportunities that augment our core R&D areas within oncology, autoimmune/inflammatory diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. Our team is located at AbbVie headquarters in Lake County, IL, Boston/Cambridge, and the San Francisco Bay area. Through this proactive engagement with the biotech and venture community, we are building AbbVie’s reputation as a leader in the biotechnology ecosystem and supplementing our R&D pipeline. ​

  • This job reports into Senior Director, AbbVie Ventures.

  • Internal contacts include: VPs of R&D to ensure strategic alignment of efforts and investments; Investment Committee (CStO, CScO, GC and CFO) for approval of Investments; Director / VP level within Finance, Legal and IP for diligence and approval purposes

  • External contacts include: VCs; Pharma/Biotech leadership/scientific founders/entrepreneurs.

  • Needs to be able to manage high level, cross-functional teams.

  • Individual must be able to act independently with minimal daily onsite managerial supervision

Responsibilities:

  • Building the AbbVie Brand: Build awareness regarding AbbVie and AbbVie Ventures

  • Opportunity Sourcing: Identify and evaluate potential investment opportunities that are aligned with AbbVie strategy, including managing and generating relationships with potential sources of opportunities and potential co-investors.

  • Assessment: Lead the assessment and (in conjunction with Search and Evaluation) drive the evaluation process and timeline, developing timely recommendations and proposals for senior management consideration, based on thorough technical review.

  • Deal Execution: Drive the investment process, including leading the diligence team and cross-functional internal review and presenting the investment recommendation to the Investment Committee, negotiating deal documents and managing the closing process.

  • Portfolio Management: Actively manage portfolio companies by representing AbbVie on the Board and building and maintaining good working relationships with executive management, the Board and co-investors.

  • Functional Excellence Initiatives: Participate in and/or lead projects and programs designed to improve the effectiveness of the team in sourcing deals, relationship building, and portfolio management.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Healthcare, Finance, Business Administration, or related experience required. MBA preferred but not required

  • Advanced degree in the sciences (Biology, Chemistry) Ph.D., M.D., M.D. /Ph.D., preferred.

  • 10 years of experience, at least 4 years of post-graduate experience executing on venture investments, licensing or acquisitions, and 5 years in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Analytic / functional backbone necessary to plan and deliver critical tactics and business operations to drive business outcomes

  • Work product generally guided by Senior Director on project; capable of leading part of a whole, organized body of work

  • 2 years exposure working directly with top level corporate executives

  • Strong understanding of drug development, regulatory, and commercialization process for evaluation of pharmaceutical opportunities; position incumbent should have working scientific knowledge that will permit them to objectively evaluate potential business opportunities

  • Project management/leadership skills to lead/manage multifunctional teams to evaluate investment opportunities and produce high quality analyses. Ability to drive projects to deliver timely results and follow through on commitments

  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate business strategies and capabilities internally and externally, present individual and team recommendations clearly and concisely, and promote cross-functional communication

  • Networking skills to reach out to a broad range of industry decision makers to keep abreast of emerging opportunities.

  • Demonstrated negotiation and influencing skills in a deal setting and ability to creatively solve problems with co-investors, portfolio company leadership and AbbVie internal team.

  • Deal sourcing through assessment of external environment, market analysis, and primary research reviewing electronic data sources

  • Transactional support for senior directors in active deals and portfolio company/board management

  • Generate trend and assessment reports on markets and therapeutic areas to support group operations and strategy
