Abbott Director, IT Business Relationship Management–Data, Analytics, and Innovation in Lake Forest, Illinois

The IT Business Relationship Management (BRM) Director for Data, Analytics & Innovation will be responsible for defining and developing Abbott’s Core Diagnostics (Core Dx) data strategy in partnership with the business domains and the Corporate IT delivery organization. This role will drive thought leadership and ensure the execution of the overarching vision, focusing on digital transformation and future state capabilities. In addition, this position is responsible for Business Relationship Management for the Core Dx Research and Development organizations.

This position is responsible for leading a multi-discipline team, fostering talent growth, building strong partnerships with the business and shared service delivery teams, ensuring the technical capabilities are available, and building out the data and analytics capability, architecture, and governance process.

Reporting to the DVP of Core Diagnostics IT with functional responsibility to the VP of Core Dx R&D and the DVP of Core Dx Digital Health Solutions business. The IT BRM Director for Data, Analytics & Innovation is responsible for driving strategic value through technology enablement and innovation. This is a full-spectrum senior IT leadership role that is accountable for developing effective relationships with Sr. Business and IT leadership and championing the development of the business unit’s data, analytics, IOT, artificial intelligence, and innovation IT strategy, providing provision and oversight of services required to support a large division’s LRP and operations. Key leadership responsibilities include partnering with business leadership to establish an overall technology strategy to support key strategic imperatives and providing cross-divisional thought leadership including areas of data use, ethics, and governance.

  • Provides strategic business technology thought leadership and insight-rich consultation related to business architecture, process optimization, data, analytics, IOT, artificial intelligence, innovation, and emerging trends.

  • Develops business unit’s data, analytics, IOT, artificial intelligence, and innovation IT portfolio of investments and works across the business to align and rationalize investments, priorities, and services.

  • Evaluates, mentors, and develops resources to elevate strategic partnerships (internal, external) across R&D, commercial, manufacturing, supply chain, regulatory, quality, finance, and product development, specifically in data, analytics, health analytics, IOT, artificial intelligence, and innovation.

  • Manages all divisional data and analytics services requirements and oversees services to include on-premises, cloud, and big data advanced analytics ecosystems.

  • Accountability to DVP Core Diagnostics IT, VP of Core Diagnostics R&D and DVP Digital Health Solutions for the overall business value of technology enablement. Assures functional alignment with Abbott’s overall technology strategy, managing business value through performance measures and total cost of ownership.

  • Serves as cross-divisional IT leader representative on the Abbott AI (Artificial Intelligence) Council and Pan-Abbott Data & Analytics / Health Analytics Council and leads Core Diagnostics’ Data Use Ethics & Governance Council. Serves as IT leader, interfacing with external health analytics customer partnerships.

  • Partners with business leadership to establish a technology strategy to support key imperatives influencing and managing Business expectations.

Key Accountabilities

Key leadership role that will work directly with division executive management to develop, identify, and align IT strategy with business priorities. Provides thought leadership to drive business value through foundational and innovative technology capabilities, including general awareness of IT industry consumer technologies/trends, industry-specific solutions, commercially available software-as-as-services, Abbott enterprise solutions, and risk/benefits of emerging technologies.

Directs appropriate business interactions focused on defining business objectives and needs to determine required IT solutions/service alternatives, yielding an executable long-range plan and capability roadmap. Works closely across business functions, corporate IT, and third-party suppliers to appropriately design and integrate solutions that effectively meet Abbott’s and the division’s overall business needs.

Oversees the complete portfolio of all data, analytics, IOT and artificial intelligence services/solutions (direct and indirect) for the division. Assures appropriate program management practices are in place to set priorities and resources and manage the delivery of IT solutions/services. Builds effective and timely interactions across functional and business teams (business, direct staff, corporate, and third-party suppliers) to deliver IT solutions and meet business objectives successfully.

Responsible for managing the aggregate cost of all data, analytics, IOT and artificial intelligence solutions and platform investments (capital and operating expenses), incorporating appropriate assessments and adjustments related to business changes across emerging and developed markets. Continuous focus on delivering ongoing cost-effective operations through simplification, process improvement, and sourcing strategies, including outsourcing.

Responsible for implementing and maintaining compliance and controls for all relevant regulations (FDA, SOX, MoH, ISO, etc.) and policies related to the Core Diagnostics data, analytics, IOT and artificial intelligence platforms. Provide thought leadership in emerging trends and is responsible for developing Abbott Principles and Policies to support evolving regulations. Ensure adequate IT controls are in place to protect Abbott and the division’s interests and appropriately safeguard assets and intellectual property.

Responsible for all aspects of people leadership for the BRM team: setting expectations, coaching, counseling, developing, evaluating, feedback, hiring, discipline, and separation. Determine the necessary skill set. Confronts and deals with people issues in a constructive and timely manner. Responsible for the overall morale of the team and promoting a cohesive attitude. Establishes staffing/resources plans to determine the appropriate mix of sourcing opportunities.

Responsible for overall organizational effectiveness. Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies and procedures. Defines and operates within broad goals and objectives. Directly manages the budget and major project completions. Makes strategic decisions that impact the scope of responsibility. Manage initiatives that span multiple virtual teams across the world and cross cultures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, business administration, or equivalent discipline.

  • 12+ years of experience in business relationship management

  • 12+ years in data and analytics in a large cross-functional organization such as healthcare, CPG, and financial services.

  • 12+ years of enterprise data strategy/architecture/governance or equivalent experience with strong program management.

  • 12+ years of IT experience in large or midsized multinational Pharmaceutical or healthcare organizations.

  • Executive presence with strong verbal/written communication skills. Must have excellent collaboration, problem-solving, and partnering skills to manage business expectations.

  • Experience developing technology strategies for business value creation related to new product capabilities, R&D, commercial, manufacturing, supply chain, regulatory, quality, finance, and product development, specifically focusing on data, analytics, health analytics, artificial intelligence, and innovation.

  • Demonstrated success leading large-scale initiatives with enterprise-level impact.

  • Financial and process skills; an understanding of the company's financial practices and goals - including drivers of process costs.

  • Demonstrated ability to approach business problems and establish a course of action creatively.

  • Experience working in a matrix global organization where success requires a broad orchestration of resources and services. Experience working in an FDA-regulated business (e.g., validated software related to medical, pharmaceutical, or life sciences products) is preferred.

  • Leader with strong business acumen to translate big data capabilities and next-generation information management solutions into business outcomes that align back to divisional strategies and support real-time decision-making.

  • Ability to collaborate with business leads, understand business strategy/processes, looks for innovative solutions to drive business solutions for internal business users and external customers.

  • Experience developing data strategies to solve technical debt and data fragmentation; partnered with IT delivery and business organizations to implement a roadmap that simplifies the IT landscape.

  • Strong understanding of data warehousing principles and big data architecture; prior experience in delivering large data management initiatives.

  • Possesses hands-on “doer” analytical role experience focused on optimization across a wide variety of businesses and functions (Commercial (Marketing, Sales, and Service), Quality, R&D, Operations)

  • Experience defining roles and responsibilities, mentoring, and leading a diverse team in a highly matrixed organization with the ability to influence.

  • Experience with vendor management, Phase 0s, Statement of Work (SOW), and Request for Proposals (RFP) reviews.

  • Experience working in a regulated environment with knowledge of validated healthcare systems.

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Proven leadership skills, self-directed with a strong work ethic.

  • Strong organizational skills, including program/project governance.

  • Knowledge of the complete software life cycle.

  • Works effectively with all levels of management up to and including Division President and VPs.

  • Track record of successfully driving change and delivering results in ambiguous environments.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, global environment with multiple priorities that require strong project management and decision-making capabilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced Degree in data science or strategy development.

  • Advanced statistical and data science knowledge, a plus.

  • Experience in managing cloud computing solutions, big date advanced analytics platforms, artificial intelligence, and operations, a plus.

  • Track record and business knowledge in diagnostics, health analytics, pharmaceutical or medical device industry.

  • Experience working with third-party vendors to procure, ingest, and use external data.

The base pay for this position is $162,000.00 – $324,000.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
