The Assistant Global Trade Advisor for Operations is responsible for leading the classification and Free Trade Agreement (FTA) aspects of Caterpillar’s Trade Operations Program. This includes management and oversight of certain trade compliance and regulatory activities associated with importing and exporting goods. This role leads a team of subject matter experts in the areas of duty and tariff classifications, Free Trade Zone administration, import/export procedures, and other trade-related compliance functions. While ensuring a strong compliance position, the role will define and oversee the execution of a long-term strategic roadmap for the Caterpillar Trade function, grow the functional capabilities, and act as an enabler for commercial growth. The successful candidate will leverage extensive expertise and knowledge of all relevant import/export regulations, business practices, and processes to facilitate a successful Caterpillar trade program.

What You Will Do:

  • Create and execute a strategic vision for compliance and lead strategic projects and initiatives relating to the classification and FTA functions

  • Identify optimization opportunities related to free trade agreement preferential duty treatment and other tariff programs

  • Educate and effect change in the organization in the trade compliance space, implement and enforce standards

  • Analyze import and export activity reports and metrics pertaining to various elements of the import and export operations process, and report out on trends, areas of concern and improvement opportunities

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Customs and Border agencies to facilitate compliant trade in global markets

  • Lead and develop a multi-national team of corporate and regional trade compliance professionals to create a sustainable competitive advantage

  • Contribute to larger functional and company strategies

What You Have:

  • Education/Certifications: Bachelor’s Degree and LCB license preferred

  • Risk Management: Knowledge of processes, tools and techniques for assessing and controlling an organization's exposure to risks of various kinds. Ability to apply knowledge of risk management appropriately to diverse situations; strong knowledge of regulatory guidelines and their application and expertise in developing standardized compliant processes

  • Analytical Thinking: Ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems; demonstrated ability to understand and digest complex scenarios to identify relevant issues and risks, propose solutions that take into consideration the relevant business objectives, and communicate those issues, risks, and solutions clearly and concisely

  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment; ability to act quickly and decisively

  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.

  • Relationship Management: Knowledge of relationship management techniques; ability to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with clients, vendors, and peers; ability to collaborate across multiple functions and influence change

  • Strategic Thinking: Knowledge of the importance of "big picture" thinking and planning; ability to apply organizational acumen and competitiveness to identify and maintain focus on key success factors for the organization.

  • Import/Export - MFG: Knowledge of issues, procedures, tools and practices of importing and exporting; ability to import and export goods to and from international locations; experience implementing and managing an effective Global Trade Management system

  • Supply Chain Management - MFG : Knowledge of functions, principles and techniques used in supply chain management; ability to develop and use, strategies, practices and tools for controlling the logistical processes.

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Typically requires 10 to 15 years related experience and 3 to 5 years of management experience

  • Experience or applicable knowledge of Customs enforcement processes

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of the company including senior leadership and staff, incorporating expertise knowledge into simplifying complex topics

  • The primary location for this position are Peoria, IL, Irving, TX, or Laredo, TX

This position is eligible for stock or other equity grants pursuant to Caterpillar’s long-term incentive plan.

Summary Pay Range:

$165,960.00 - $248,880.00

Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
