The Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream from procurement to design and manufacturing to distribution. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts Distribution of Cat Parts, Integrated Logistics, segment Procurement and the design and manufacture of Wear Components (Undercarriage and GET) and Maintenance Components (Seals, Tubes & Hardware, Hose & Couplings, Fluids and Filters).

Our Mapleton Foundry makes Caterpillar Precision Seals and has been producing a high performing product with a great history. Our unique seals have been designed and patented by the Caterpillar Engineers in the 1960’s. They have been made by our foundry ever since. This role is an opportunity to learn the OEM business and is highly integrated within the Caterpillar business. We start with rocks/sand and end with product shipped to end customers.

As the Senior Manager, Manufacturing Operations for the Mapleton Foundry, you will serve as the facility manager and are responsible for all elements of the manufacturing organization with safety and quality as top priorities.

Success in the first year, you would have accomplished:

  • Clear focus on safety work environment.

  • Understanding the business supported including customers, suppliers, opportunities, challenges, and short and long-term goals.

  • Build a strong trust relationship with your management team.

  • Understand the dynamics of the workforce and build on strong employee engagement.

  • Strong understanding of seals productions and manufacturing processes.

  • Strong global team member contributing to the success of the worldwide seals wears components organizations.

What You Will Do:

Lead all elements of the Mapleton Seals organization including manufacturing, assembly, testing, shipping in accordance with demand, quality, velocity, safety, and employee experience. Provide leadership and collaboration to all levels of leaders, employees, customers, and suppliers.

  • Manage all dimensions of the facility by setting direction for the facility using insights and safety performance.

  • Ensure total manufacturing effort by directing all operation departments.

  • Ensure production scheduling can be met in a lean manufacturing environment to satisfy assembly line and parts schedule requirements.

  • Prevent manufacturing and assembly line shutdowns through strong maintenance strategy.

  • Partner with support organizations (medical, business resources, environment and health safety, human resources).

  • Annual business planning and execution.

  • Leading continuous improvement process, making sure new ideas are generated, worked, and implemented, while eliminating roadblocks.

  • Develop detailed new-term and long-term production plans.

  • Clearly communicate facility results and strategy to senior leadership.

  • Other duties as assigned by Caterpillar management from time-to-time.

What You Have:

  • Manufacturing Safety: Knowledge of manufacturing safety; ability to identify work-related hazards and perform necessary activities to meet regulatory requirements for the safety and protection of workers, environment, and site. Consults on the use of new tools and techniques for safety protection. Performs safety inspections to assure compliance with OSHA requirements. Designs and implements emergency response processes and procedures. Promotes workplace safety among supervisors and workers; communicates safety rules and regulations. Assesses and reports unusual or new safety hazards or violations; initiates corrective action. Ensures that all employees and contractors comply with relevant safety policies and regulations.

  • Budgeting: Knowledge of organization's budget process; ability to apply policies and practices for planning and administering a budget. Uses organization's preferred budgeting software tools. Compares planned budgets vs. actual expenditures, identifies, reports, and explains variances. Works with business managers to create appropriate budget amounts. Participates in developing budget adjustment procedures and practices. Develops and manages large and important budgets. Evaluates past business decisions and associated budgetary considerations and impact.

  • Quality Management: Knowledge of quality management methods, tools, and techniques and ability to create and support an environment that meets the quality goals of the organization. Interprets results of quantitative and statistical tools and explains results to others. Communicates key benefits of a quality management process. Conducts and directs quality reviews. Develops expertise in quality assurance tools, techniques, and standards. Develops quality assurance processes based on Six Sigma, ISO 9000 or Baldrige principles. Develops programs for motivating employees to meet or exceed quality goals.

  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems. Seeks discrepancies and inconsistencies in available information; explains variances. Organizes and prioritizes the sequence of steps to be taken to remedy the situation. Identifies many possible causes for a problem based on prior experience and current research. Quantifies the costs, benefits, risks, and chances for success before recommending a course of action. Approaches a complex problem by breaking it down into its component parts. Chooses among a diverse set of analytical tools according to the nature of the situation.

  • Planning and Organizing: Knowledge of the process of planning and arranging tasks and resources; ability to plan and organize both time and resources to get things completed while structuring and maintaining work in a systematic and highly methodical way. Optimizes time, tools, and resources to achieve desired results. Manages links among multiple projects and anticipates the impact of the project's outcome on all concerned. Synthesizes pertinent information to plan a course of action. Documents plans with clear objectives, action steps, accountabilities, resource requirements and timelines. Tracks successes in order to establish processes viewed as effective for the entire enterprise. Specifies the underlying assumptions related to designated work.

  • Performance Management: Knowledge of successful performance management techniques; ability to apply organization's performance management system, practices, and tools to developing and improving individual, team, and organizational performance. Plays a leading role in designing individual and team reward and recognition systems. Identifies key issues in integrating selection, development, recognition, and reward systems. Coaches less experienced managers in the processes of performance management. Monitors industry for new approaches or ideas re performance management. Takes part in developing and implementing enterprise-wide performance management systems. Champions a climate that supports and rewards excellent group and individual performance.

  • Manufacturing Operations: Knowledge of manufacturing operations; ability to perform day-to-day operations of a manufacturing plant or facility for products. Builds a monitoring system to track manufacturing operation activities. Sets and oversees all operational routines for departments and staff. Oversees proper safety and security procedures to ensure accreditation approval. Designs strategies to minimize machinery problems and safety risks within the organization. Develops plans for movement of products through lines to processing, storage, and shipping units. Leads discussions on the history and evolution of manufacturing plants and associated services and functions.

  • Manufacturing Standards, Procedures and Policies: Knowledge of organizational standards, procedures, and policies in manufacturing activities; ability to plan, guide, and monitor manufacturing processes for compliance. Consults on development and implementation of cross-functional standards. Participates in the development of organizational policies and practices. Develops and uses control and monitoring mechanisms for adherence. Collaborates with other functions on establishing and documenting joint standards. Participates in defining architectural principles and standards for organization. Ensures communication vehicles are effectively informing affected areas and employees.
