The Beauty Consumer Measurement Sciences Organization is seeking an expert Sensory Scientist to help define outstanding sensory methodologies for top priority projects in Beauty. As a function, Sensory Scientists are responsible for designing and leading research in partnership with panel leaders and Beauty R&D Scientists/Engineers to provide robust data focused on translating first use wow/1.5MOT Vectors into measurable sensory attributes. Sensory Scientists train sensory panels and develop consumer relevant attributes, protocols, and models that enable robust product development, claims, and insights. This role will also be responsible for identifying new consumer research capability by searching for and reapplying internal and/or external innovative methodologies that will best enable teams to uncover consumer insights to drive decisions and even bigger initiatives!
Job Qualifications
As the Sensory Scientist for Hair Care, you will be part of R&D project teams chartered to create winning product propositions with the goal of delivering on the comprehensive product promise. Specific responsibilities will include:
Serving as the primary Sensory contact for the Hair Care Category who anticipates category research needs, improve thinking around research tools and approaches to build consumer to product technical models and Body of Evidence, all while effectively leading to deliver on business priorities and timelines.
Designing and implementing sensory and consumer learning plans to uncover deep sensory and consumer insights to define the consumer target and clearly articulate the Jobs to be Done. Driving study and sample preparation and placement, as well as conducting thorough analyses, documenting and communicating findings to provide clear direction for projects/ programs.
Championing the utilization of novel approaches or groundbreaking methodologies that are more effective and/or more efficient.
Ability to effectively select, train, qualify and maintain experienced sensory panelists, coach and train Sensory Panel Leaders, and partner with contract staff to ensure robust study execution. The Sensory Scientist must be able to translate a consumer need into relevant sensory requirements and then finding a way to reliably measure/quantify those sensory attributes.
Developing key partnerships with category project teams, methods groups, A&I, external suppliers, and other x-OU Sensory Teams to proactively grow the Beauty business and Sensory Capability.
Sensory Science Technical Mastery: The sensory scientist should have a specialization in any of the following areas - food science, visual perception, cognitive psychology, experimental psychology, neuroscience, and other related scientific disciplines (PhD). Prior experience in the field is preferred, but not required.
Products Research Technical Mastery: To be an effective partner with Category PR, you will need a broad range of PR experience across quantitative and qualitative methodologies, both traditional and groundbreaking methods. Have passion for the consumer and ability to identify, create and champion new PR methods to provide better solutions that optimize timing and success of initiatives.
Leadership Skills: Consistent track record of project management, with perfect ability to balance multiple priorities, while maintaining the scientific integrity of the consumer study. A successful Hair Care Sensory Scientist must optimally lead project partners through the process of identifying the key sensory questions to be solved, recommending a research design, and selecting the right research methods. Demonstrates ownership, initiative, develops plans, resolves issues and delivers. Champions new and better ways to achieve project objectives. Assesses and clearly communicates risks associated with different choices to enable the team to make decisions. Strong attention to detail.
Collaboration: Demonstrated ability in building collaborative, productive work partnerships. This role requires an ability to be a strong collaborator, who can effectively work with multiple personalities and skill levels. Will serve as a liaison between project teams, statisticians, and suppliers. Will work directly with suppliers on bids, test execution and data integrity. Also requires the ability to network with thought-leaders to identify groundbreaking methods and standard processes.
Agility and “Can Do” Attitude: You will have a broad range of projects and will need to stay in touch with the dynamic demands of the business and be flexible to adapt to these changes making efficient use of resources, external suppliers, and personal capacity to deliver on the business priorities. It is inevitable that last minute changes happen, so it is very important that the Sensory Scientist is agile and flexible, reacts to change in a productive and positive way, and solves problems or scheduling conflicts in a timely manner. Flexibility is also required in method development, as small changes to an otherwise standard protocol may be needed to answer a critical sensory question a project team may have. Finally the day to day sensory operation can throw unexpected changes at you that require quick trouble shooting. Multi-tasking is a base expectation, as we typically run multiple tests per month from different requestors and projects-so you will need to be well organized and have a system to keep track ofRequests and testing needs. Some of the sensory tests require little data analysis, while other projects may require a debrief with a project leader followed by a comprehensive final report, which means you have to handle your time wisely.
Operates with Discipline: Ability to deliver creative solutions to improve consumer understanding within regulations, fiscal responsibility, and project timeline constraints. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a track record of applying attention to detail, ability to meet agreed timelines and budgets and to act with a sense of urgency.
Independence: Demonstrated ability to work independently making day-to-day project decisions within the framework of project needs (timelines, constraints, expectations).
Grows Capability: Ability to mentor and develop Sensory and Consumer Science skills in less experienced products researchers. Ability to influence more experienced Sensory & Consumer Scientists to enable adoption of new tools & techniques.

Experience in Beauty is a plus, but not required.
