Job Description

Business Purpose of the Job:

PhD Intern/Analytical Chemist Intern – Corporate R&D. The Win Today section including Trace Impurities Innovation and Sustainability and Safety Innovation groups are seeking highly motivated interns to develop methods that will produce chemical transparency knowledge about our raw materials, intermediates, and finished products to drive innovation. P&G’s laboratories house the most advanced analytical instrumentation in the consumer products industry and are often the final resource for complex measurements not achievable by other labs.

The interns will focus their work on a variety of analytical techniques - candidates do not need experience with all the instrumentation outlined in this job posting. We are seeking candidates with strong laboratory experience and with a passion for leveraging analytical equipment to solve technical problems. For the right candidate, this internship could be used to learn a new instrument capability. The specific internship project will be designed to find the right project for the candidates’ skills. That said, specific experience with a variety of analytical equipment is a plus and could include:

  • Chromatographic (e.g., UHPLC) or ion mobility separation techniques coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and ancillary detectors, such as photodiode array (PDA), Charged Aerosol Detection (CAD), Evaporative Light Scattering Detection (ELSD), etc.

  • Inorganic analysis techniques including inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry or optical emission (ICP-MS, ICP-OES) and X-ray fluoresces (XRF).

These techniques will be applied on a variety of materials to build databases, uncover structure/function relationships for key P&G technologies, and spearhead efforts to democratize and activate analytical data. In all cases, Corporate R&D’s Win Today section provides critical measurements for human & environmental safety and delivers on P&G’s commitment to chemical transparency and sustainability of our products and packaging.

Important Responsibilities of Job:

During a summer internship (10-12 weeks), up to two interns will partner closely with analytical experts to execute, summarize, and report critical scientific findings about P&G products. Taking the next step in radical transparency, uncovering structure/function relationships, and driving sustainable packaging all require the use of a variety of techniques coupled together including wet chemistry sample preparation.

The person in this role will work to create new analytical methods that can be applied across multiple businesses at P&G. By leveraging the high-end instrumentation at P&G, including chromatography coupled to our multi-detector MS platform, these new methods will be deployed to address critical business needs. This role is an in lab-focused position requiring superb attention to detail and documentation, abilities to maintain/improve research processes, great collaboration/communication skills, and ideally hands-on experience with LC-MS instrumentation and/or inorganic analytical instrumentation.

Job Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • All interested candidates must be currently enrolled in PhD program in a STEM field such as Chemistry (Organic, Inorganic, Bio, Analytical, Physical), Life Science (Biology, Microbiology, bioinformatics, toxicology, pharmacology), Environmental Science (Earth, space), or a related field.

  • Passionate about hands-on experimental work and demonstrated track record of leading, building and testing technical hypotheses.

  • Demonstrated practical lab experience including sample preparation/field work/sample collection, developing and/or driving analytical methodologies, and designing experiments to answer scientifically relevant questions.

  • Skilled in resolving laboratory issues, critical thinking and problem solving.

  • Ability to clearly communicate scientific results via presentations, abstracts and/or publications.

  • Ability to accept change by leading multiple priorities at any given time and is adaptable to different approaches to projects/people.

  • Collaborative great teammate with the ability to work in a multi-functional organization.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Applied laboratory experience specifically using high-end instrumentations including any organic chromatographic (LC, GC, SFC, etc.) and/or ion mobility separation techniques coupled to mass spectrometry and/or ancillary detectors (PDA, CAD, ELSD, etc.) or inorganic analytical instrumentation (ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRF).

  • Computer & Data Science Skills – Familiarity and proficiency in instrument control software and data management systems. Using a programing language to activate and communicate scientific results effectively.

  • Strong understanding of polymer chemistry is a plus, as this internship could include the development and evaluation of the extractables from polymeric materials.

Skills Needed to Perform This Job:

Ability to focus on detail and the precision/accuracy needed for execution of analytical methodologies. Good documentation of work and interpretation of scientific results. Scientific problem solving and passion for in-lab perfection. Hyphenated mass spectrometry techniques & hands-on in-lab experience is preferred. Experience with current high end analytical instrumentation including instrument software. The candidate should possess excellent communication skills (both written and oral) and be an exceptional partner.

Skills You Can Expect to Learn/Build in This Job:

Expand toolbox of multiple analytical methodologies. Enhance problem solving skills by gaining proven experience in a fast-paced laboratory environment. Develop challenging measurement methods, design sophisticated experimental plans, and interpret convoluted data. Build deep analytical mastery. Develop extensive internal network via collaborations with technologists in all functions and sectors. Immerse in best-in-class analytical capabilities.
