Captive Insurance Claims Manager

Primary Purpose:

We are seeking an experienced Claims Manager to help oversee and manage all aspects of our insurance claim process for our newly formed Captive Insurance Company. The ideal candidate combines business insight and communication skills with superb claims management execution. This person will partner with stakeholders across multiple departments to strategically develop and oversee the day-to-day administration of insurance claims in our Captive Insurance Program. The role requires a balance of strategic vision and tactical execution.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Majority of duties performed, but not meant to be all-inclusive or to prevent other duties from being assigned.

  • Develop the strategy for insurance claims management and oversight of all claims under the Captive Program, including managing and overseeing claims from intake to closure across open hull, protection & indemnity, and general marine liability insurance lines.

  • Capture and leverage data analytics related to claims to help create best practices for claims reporting including, financial loss, trending, lag reporting, indemnity, reserve changes, and loss fund reserves and payments.

  • Collect and review claims data to identify trends and opportunities for loss control; collaborate with risk management to recommend loss control initiatives.

  • Within delegated settlement authority acknowledge, negotiate, set and monitor reserves, settle, and resolve all assigned claims.

  • Correspond with policyholders, claimants, experts and attorneys on various matters including, but not limited to gathering important information to support contested claims in litigation.

  • Maintain and develop positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders on administrative matters and coordinate efforts on significant situations

  • Monitor and evaluate industry legislative changes and industry resources to determine impact on the Company and provide recommendations for action to mitigate risk and/or ensure compliance.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Job Specifications: Knowledge, skills, and abilities normally required for competent performance in the job.

  • 5+ years of prior claims management experience or equivalent insurance defense experience

  • Strong knowledge of and prior experience with the litigation process

  • Strong project management skills

  • Understanding of admiralty law and marine products liability preferred, but not required

  • Previous experience with Captive Insurance Programs preferred, but not required

  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and written

  • Organized and able to multi-task with ability to effectively re-prioritize tasks as needed

  • Demonstrated ability to increase productivity and improve methods and approaches

  • Must have proven analytical, negotiation, decision making, problem solving, organizational and presentation skills

  • Utilize professional experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel software
