United States Steel Product Application Engineer II in Michigan

  • Manage the process for identifying new global/regional business opportunities by analyzing future product requirements and actively participate on the strategy team.

  • Initiate and complete material and design related projects (internally with customers, other Tier 1 companies, and industry) to promote USS advance automotive products in production vehicles.

  • Assist in the investigation, identification, and definition of new or enhanced products and/or revenue opportunities. Work across U. S. Steel and with technical Joint Ventures, Research & Development, and other partners to develop and refine product designs.

  • Stay abreast of industry trends that are relevant for product development or evaluating product design opportunities.

  • Serve as a technical representative for Sales in customer discussions and work with Product Managers to assess how/if potential new product opportunities fit into the overall product strategy.

  • Specific for the Tooling Engineer role:

  • Main job function will be to travel to customer locations and perform formability assessments (Circle Grid Analysis), document results, and work with customers on recommendations for improvement.

  • Familiar with CAD systems UG-NX and Catia V5 and the ability to work with multiple file formats.

  • Must have 5 years of die construction/design/dimensional verification and tool layouts.

  • Familiar with forming simulation reports from AutoForm and/or LS-Dyna.

  • Must be able to clearly communicate with die shops providing them with additional information to aid in the construction of the die, and troubleshoot issues such as edge cracking, thinning, splitting and able to complete tooling reports for OEMs and provide modeling concepts that correlate with actual die construction.

  • Must be able to lead design reviews making recommendations and providing leadership to the team.

  • Must be able to collaborate and work in a team environment with a high level of interpersonal skills and able to create technical reports and have high presentation skills.

  • Must have an extensive understanding of sheet metal forming principals, materials commonly used in today’s applications and can recommend material alternatives based on application and product geometry.

  • Must be able to communicate advanced considerations and modeling techniques for materials, sheet metal forming, die process, die design to the team and educate individuals for future growth. Keep up to date with latest die processes and tooling trends to maintain industry leading skills.

  • High level of analytical ability where problem solving is a must.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, Mechanical or related engineering field or equivalent experiences.

  • Requires at least 5 years of quality related experience in the automotive industry, with experience in structured problem solving, and proactive quality resolution.

  • Desire at least three years of related experience with flat roll products in quality or operating capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience which includes extensive sheet processing/product knowledge;

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Perform formability assessments (Circle Grid Analysis), document results, and work with customers on recommendations for improvement.

  • Review automotive structures using Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS)

  • Review AutoForm simulations for part draw simulation and full cycle/process simulations.

  • Knowledge of quality tools such as Six Sigma, 8D, 5Y, Shainin Strategies

  • Experienced engineer with knowledge of tooling, forming and material quality to be used as a technical resource in customer plant issues;

  • Understanding of mill product quality standards, capabilities, and limitations

  • Familiarity with ASTM and JIS industry standards;

  • Sheet mill process/product experience preferred;

  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with a strong focus on continuous improvement, cost avoidance and a sense of urgency.

Technical Skills required:

  • Required: Excel, Circle Grid Analysis, Forming Limit Diagram

  • Preferred: AutoForm, DynaForm, PAM Stamp, Catia and NX.

Personal Skills required:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Problem solver.

  • Positive can-do attitude to contribute to team’s success

  • Travel: Yes, 50% or more. Mostly southeast Michigan area, but also travel to customer locations in Ontario, Illinois, Ohio, Alabama, etc. as needed.
