We are hiring a R&D Scientist to join our Midland, MI team.

This is an On-site opportunity. Position will require up to 20% travel to plant or customer facilities.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical strength in engineering, polymer science, chemistry, materials science, polymer composites, and/or polymer characterization and processing.

  • Ability to learn and contribute to improved properties, polymer processing, and chemistry related to foam products.

  • Specialization and experience with extrusion and foam science and processing is valued.

  • Formulation and application expertise

  • Growth areas include designing fire resistant products, inorganic materials, recycled materials, and bio-derived materials.

  • Enable close cooperation between the R&D, Manufacturing & Engineering, Finance, Sales and Marketing, and other R&D groups (both internal and external)

  • Core capability of utilizing the Scientific Method and ability to lead multiple hypothesis-based research projects utilizing stage-gate methodologies.

  • Lead laboratory, pilot plant, or in-plant experiments for data generation and analysis

  • Skills for documentation of results in reports and ensuring appropriate intellectual property is created to protect DuPont technology and competitive advantage.

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in products, processes, or organization for business benefit.

  • Technical presentations at internal team meetings, external conferences, and customer facilities.

  • Maintain a high level of safety awareness at the program level and is a vocal safety advocate in all operations at the department level.

Qualifications

  • PhD, MS, or BS in Polymer Processing, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.

  • 2 years + Experience in our core science and processing of polymers and polymer composites. Consideration would be given for our new growth areas of fire-resistant materials, inorganic materials, recycled materials, or bioderived materials.

  • Experience with operation of small pilot plants or process scale-up is desired.

  • Background experience in utilizing multiple analytical and physical testing procedures to identify and characterize products (such as NMR, chromatography, image analysis, thermal analysis, tensile, compressive, friction, etc.) is preferred.

  • Experience in synthesis and characterization of organic compounds, polymers, and new materials is preferred.

  • Proficiently uses patent analysis tools to maintain expert understanding of a technology/market area. Demonstrated ability to analyze prior art and incorporating information and knowledge management tools and systems into work.

  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated use of statistics and DOE principles.

  • Must be able to work well in teams and to work independently with limited supervision.

  • Highly motivated and self-directed individual with the ability to interact with employees at all levels in the organization.

  • Strong bias for documenting work and effectively communicates verbally and in writing.

  • Recognized within your organization for effectiveness and credibility.
