Job Description

Avery Dennison is looking for an R&D laboratory technician to support new material development and testing. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of materials science and experience with performance testing, be self-motivated, and able to prioritize tasks effectively. Responsibilities include conducting various laboratory activities, analyzing materials, and troubleshooting issues. This is a day shift (8A-4P, Mon-Fri) developmental role with opportunities for growth and mentorship from a senior scientist.

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Perform comprehensive lab tests on raw materials, finished products, and equipment, focusing on precise measurements and both quantitative and qualitative analyses to ensure product quality and compliance.

  • Use a range of lab tools and systems effectively, including instrument software, analytical tools, and lab information management systems, to ensure accurate and efficient data collection and analysis.

  • Manage multiple tests and timelines simultaneously, carefully coordinating schedules and resources to meet team performance and project targets.

  • Collaborate with colleagues and project leaders to ensure smooth workflow, alignment on project goals, and timely delivery of accurate testing results.

  • Maintain expectations for accuracy and speed in testing, meeting both quality and turnaround expectations within a high-output laboratory setting.

  • Follow Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) protocols rigorously, actively participating in safety initiatives and ensuring compliance with company policies and trainings.

  • Provide testing support for diverse teams, including project management, customer service, and technology development, contributing valuable data and insights to aid decision-making.

  • Record and document test results accurately, capturing key observations, failure modes, and any significant events in lab notebooks and spreadsheets for traceability and analysis.

  • Maintain and clean lab equipment following strict safety and operational guidelines to ensure reliability and readiness for future testing needs.

  • Ensure organization and cleanliness in the lab, upholding housekeeping standards and reporting near-miss incidents to promote a safe working environment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, Engineering, or related field preferred.

  • 6+ years in a technical environment with proficiency in lab safety, including chemical hazard identification, handling, and disposal.

  • Strong data management and reporting skills with proficiency in Google or Microsoft Office.

  • Eager to learn and collaborate with senior scientists, with a focus on career development.

  • Proficient in creating and managing Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Strong written and verbal communication, math, and analytical skills.

  • Experience in industrial manufacturing, chemicals, and coatings preferred.

  • Ability to contribute to quantitative/qualitative analysis and decision-making.

  • Statistical analysis skills and willingness to take on increased responsibilities are a plus.
